I have to admit – I am a wuss and, as a result, I’m not the biggest horror game fanatic out there. Since my Doom days, when I was cowering behind walls, hiding from (potential) Demons, I usually get jumpscares from games that aren’t even intended to be horror.
But fortunately, I won’t let my weakness get the best of me and I keep playing them – although during the day and with the lights turned on. HA!
Jokes aside, I have hand-picked the absolute best horror games that you should play today. From better-known titles to more obscure recommendations, these games have one thing in common: they are scary good!
Silent Hill 2 Remake

Released: October 2024
You cannot talk about horror in 2026 without mentioning the king. After years of skepticism, the Silent Hill 2 Remake arrived and silenced every critic – it’s a real masterpiece!
You play as James Sunderland, who receives a letter from his wife asking him to meet her in their “special place” in Silent Hill. The problem? She’s been dead for three years.
The fog-drenched streets look incredible, and the sound design is terrifyingly immersive. It respects the original’s psychological depth while modernizing the combat just enough to feel responsive without losing that desperate sense of vulnerability.
If you only play one horror game this year, make it this one.

R.E.P.O.

Released: February 2025
Scary games are great solo, but they hit different when you play them with friends (or strangers). R.E.P.O. has taken the multiplayer horror genre by storm since its release last year and it’s still going strong.
Locate valuable, fully physics-based objects and handle them with care as you retrieve and extract to satisfy your creator’s desires. Of course, it’s never easy.
The physics engine leads to some hilarious and terrifying moments – trying to drag a heavy artifact while something hunts you in the dark is a panic-inducing experience.

No, I’m not a Human

Released: September 2025
A game that I’ve been playing a lot of lately, No, I’m not a Human is not your traditional, jump scare type of horror game. Instead, it’s dark, psychological and always keeps you on the edge. The game’s short description perfectly captures what it offers:
“Stay inside. Lock your doors. Close the blinds. Only let humans in. Eliminate all Visitors. An anxiety horror about paranoia in the End of Times.”
To make things easier for you, I wrote a guide on how to spot visitors in No, I’m Not a Human, How to Get Martyr Achievement, and the “May Death Cleanse Us of Our Sins!” Achievement Guide.

Little Nightmares III

Released: October 2025
While the game’s reception wasn’t great immediately after launch, Little Nightmares 3 remains an amazing Steam horror game.
Just like its predecessors, the game is a dark atmospheric adventure where Low and Alone, two friends trapped in the eerie world of Nowhere, must work together to escape. Play solo with an AI companion or team up online to solve puzzles and survive the horrors ahead.
Try it on Steam.
Mouthwashing

Released: September 2024
Mouthwashing is a first-person horror game following the dying crew of a shipwrecked space freighter. And it’s a lot better than you can imagine, trust me!
With retro vibes and solid psychological horror moments, this indie game took the world by storm and created a cult following, for all the right reasons. An amazing horror game to start our list with!

Conrad Stevenson’s Paranormal P.I.

Released: September 2023
If ghost hunting in a slow, methodical style is your thing, Conrad Stevenson’s Paranormal P.I. might just be the hidden gem you’ve been looking for.
As an amateur paranormal investigator, you explore haunted houses and other spooky locations armed with real-world ghost-hunting tools like EMF meters and cameras. The focus here is more on atmosphere and the slow discovery of hauntings rather than action or survival. But there are plenty of jump scares to keep everybody happy. Or not, depending on your point of view.

Amnesia: The Bunker

Released: June 2023
Amnesia: The Bunker brings a fresh spin to the Amnesia franchise, combining survival horror with an open-world sandbox environment. Set in a dark World War I bunker, you are left to explore and survive as a terrifying monster hunts you down.
Unlike previous games, The Bunker gives you more tools to survive, from weapons to crafting supplies, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less terrifying or easier. The game’s AI-driven monster adapts to your behavior, making every encounter different and every step you take fraught with danger.

Resident Evil Requiem

Release: February 2026
Resident Evil Requiem is shaping up to be the biggest horror event 2026. Following the massive success of the recent remakes, Capcom is taking the series into a new era.
The demos and previews suggest a return to the series’ darker roots, blending the over-the-shoulder action we love with a much grimier, more oppressive atmosphere than Village. Ammo conservation looks like it will be key again.
If you are a fan of the franchise, this is the one to pre-load.

The Outlast Trials

Released: March 2024
If you thought Outlast couldn’t get any more terrifying, The Outlast Trials will change your mind. This latest installment in the Outlast series swaps out single-player for co-op, letting you and your friends survive a brutal experiment orchestrated by the sinister Murkoff Corporation.
Unlike previous games, you now have some ability to fight back and work together as a team, but make no mistake: you’re still vulnerable, and the horrors lurking in the facility are relentless.
The game excels at creating tension, with claustrophobic environments and grotesque enemies constantly hunting you down. It forces players to think fast and work together, blending psychological horror with pulse-pounding action.

Sons of the Forest

Released: February 2024
This long-awaited sequel to The Forest thrusts players into another terrifying survival horror experience, but with a larger scope and even more nightmarish creatures.
In Sons of the Forest, you’re sent to rescue a missing billionaire on a remote island, only to discover that the island is full of cannibalistic mutants and other horrors.
The building mechanics are fantastic, but the AI is what makes this game shine. Enemies study you, probe your defenses, and attack when you’re vulnerable. Playing with friends makes it slightly less terrifying, but exploring deep caves is always a heart-pounding experience.

Crisol: Theater of Idols

Released: February 2026
Set in a twisted and nightmarish, folklore-infused version of Spain, this game delivers amazing FPS horror mechanics and truly delightful visuals. After all, there aren’t many games out there where you use his own blood as both ammunition and a lifeline.
So more slow-paced, but also gripping, blending exploration and tense combat in a beautiful yet scary world. Perfection!

The Tartarus Key

Released: May 2023
The Tartarus Key is a first-person horror puzzler that takes inspiration from classic escape rooms and psychological horror games. As a result, the visuals don’t offer as much eye candy, but you have everything else there.
You play as Alex, who wakes up in a mysterious mansion filled with traps, puzzles, and cryptic messages.
What makes The Tartarus Key stand out is its focus on puzzle-solving and story rather than combat – although it remains creepy and scary. It’s an excellent choice for those who prefer thinking their way through horror scenarios rather than fighting off monsters.

The Séance of Blake Manor

Released: October 2025
This title flew under the radar for many, but it is a masterclass in gothic horror, and a great alternative to No, I’m not a Human recommended above.
You are part of a team of mediums attempting to cleanse a Victorian estate. It’s immersive, terrifying, and one of the freshest takes on ghost hunting I’ve seen in years.

The Casting of Frank Stone

Released: September 2024
This title deserves its spot here thanks to the psychological horror experience that it delivers.
You’re cast into the shoes of Frank, a struggling actor who finds himself trapped in a disturbing series of auditions where the lines between performance and reality begin to blur.
Its strong narrative focus and constant feeling of dread make it a fantastic horror game for those who love tension without relying on cheap jump scares. Which is right up my alley

The Floor Above

Released: April 2026
This one is for somebody who is looking for something truly different. And trust me when I say this one fits the bill perfectly, as your only possible moves in the game are turning and blinking.
While it might not seem much, it results in a deeply intense and unsettling experience. I won’t say more not to spoil it, but you have to try it.

Comatose

Last but not least, Comatose is the most recent entry on the list – and a game worthy to be here. And prepare to be deeply disturbed.
You play a girl, Laura, who finds herself trapped in a relentless, looping nightmare inside her own comatose mind.
This is a grimy, retro-styled survival horror FPS with scarce resources, where your sanity is as limited as your ammo. The game’s visual style is unique also, with a “stop-motion-esque” quality to its animations that makes everything feel even more unsettling, dense and tense.
Released: June 2026
