The Creator of Monkey Island Returns With Death by Scrolling, a Roguelite You’ll Die to Play

Ron Gilbert – yes, the mind behind Monkey Island and Thimbleweed Park – is back, and this time he’s out for blood.

His next game, Death by Scrolling, is set to launch on October 28, 2025, bringing a mix of dark humor, pixel chaos, and the kind of punishment roguelite fans secretly love for some reason.

Developed by Terrible Toybox NZ and published by MicroProse, Death by Scrolling doesn’t beat around the bush and is as straightforward as it can get.

Actually, the title says it all – you scroll, you fight, you die, and then you do it all over again. Think Hades meets Loop Hero in a darker Stardew Valley setting, but with Gilbert’s trademark sarcasm and self-aware storytelling keeping you laughing between deaths.

A new trailer dropped alongside the release date announcement, showcasing the game’s frantic combat, sardonic writing, and retro-modern pixel aesthetic. You can check it out below:

Players can expect tight controls, power-ups that might make things worse instead of better, and enemies that don’t believe in mercy. The game’s sharp humor pokes fun at the player’s suffering, making every defeat feel like part of the joke.

Or, at least in my case, probably resulting in excessive rage that will require me to buy new mice or keyboards. It wouldn’t be the first time happening…

MicroProse describes it as “fast, funny, furious,” with a hidden meta-narrative buried beneath the chaos, assuming you’re stubborn (or good) enough to survive long enough to find it.

Death by Scrolling launches first on Steam, with versions for all consoles “coming soon.” Wishlist it now if you’re ready to laugh, cry, and die, not necessarily in that order.
