The next big chapter in the Pokémon franchise is officially here. Pokémon Legends: Z-A is now available worldwide for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, marking one of the boldest gameplay shifts the series has ever seen.
For the first time in a mainline Pokémon RPG, battles are real-time. No more turn-based waiting – instead, trainers can now move freely alongside their Pokémon, issuing commands on the fly as attacks and dodges unfold dynamically in the arena.
It’s the kind of system fans have been begging for since Pokémon Legends: Arceus first hinted at a more action-oriented approach, and it’s finally a reality. Sure, it will take some time to get used to and I am sure there will be complaints, but I still believe it’s a nice move and a modern direction for the series.

Set in Lumiose City, the heart of the Kalos region, the story centers around an ambitious urban redevelopment plan aiming to rebuild the city for both humans and Pokémon.
But when the sun goes down, things heat up. Every night, battle zones appear across the city for the Z-A Royale, a massive competition that runs from dusk until dawn. Trainers can rise through the ranks, from Rank Z all the way to Rank A, while tackling bonus card challenges that add extra layers of strategy to each encounter.
Of course, Mega Evolution is back. Certain Pokémon can now transform mid-battle, changing not only their appearance but sometimes even their type – a feature that completely flips the tide of combat and opens up the door for even more strategies.
But it’s not all under player control: Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon can appear throughout Lumiose as well, forcing Trainers to adapt fast or get wiped out.

Players looking for a more competitive edge can jump into the Z-A Battle Club, where up to four Trainers can face off in chaotic free-for-all matches either locally or online. It’s a feature that could finally give Pokémon’s multiplayer scene the adrenaline shot it’s been missing.
Those who started the game on the original Switch can also upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition via a digital upgrade pack, bringing improved visuals and smoother performance to the next-gen hardware.
Whether it lives up to the hype remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: Lumiose City just became the new center of the Pokémon world and I am excited. Are you?
