After putting in more hours in Risk of Rain 2 than I’m willing to admit, dying in every possible way, and finally mastering each survivor (or at least getting as close to that as possible), I am finally ready to provide you with the up-to-date Risk of Rain 2 tier list that reflects how these characters actually perform once you’ve got everything else perfected.
The truth is that after the “Survivor Revamp” patch in 2025 and the long-term meta shift from the Seekers of the Storm expansion, the game feels different than it used to, and you have to adapt.
If you’re trying to figure out who to main now, which survivor fits your style, or which one gives you the best shot at surviving past the mid-game chaos, read on!
Risk of Rain 2 Survivors Overview (Best Features & Playstyle)
Every survivor in Risk of Rain 2 brings something unique to the table. Some are great for hit-and-run tactics, some for brute force, and others reward precision or planning – each being potentially awesome depending on how you like to play.
To help you decide, if you don’t want to be spoiled by actual rankings, here’s a quick look at what each one does best and how they’re meant to be played:
Bandit: A back-stabbing specialist who resets cooldowns on kills. Great for sneaky, hit-and-run combat.
Railgunner: The queen of long-range precision and massive single-target damage. Best at long-range precision and positioning.
Engineer: A defensive strategist who uses turrets to automate the fight.
Captain: A tactical leader with orbital support and the best defensive passive in the game.
Loader: A high-speed melee brawler with unmatched vertical movement.
Mercenary: An agile swordsman who relies on “I-frames” (invincibility) to survive.
Rex: A high-risk plant-robot hybrid that trades its own health for power.
Huntress: A glass cannon that trades health for auto-aim and high mobility.
MUL-T: A heavy-duty robot that can carry two equipment items at once.
Void Fiend: A versatile monster that shifts between healing and pure aggression.
Artificer: A slow-moving mage with high burst damage and elemental control.
Acrid: A poison specialist that excels at “hit and run” tactics against huge health pools.
Heretic: A secret character with massive stats but a self-draining health bar.
Commando: The basic soldier who scales better than anyone with “Proc” items.
Seeker: A high-mobility monk who can heal, fly, and even bring teammates back from the dead.
CHEF: A combo-based cook who uses cleavers and fire to melt groups of enemies.
False Son: A massive tank that scales his power directly from his health pool.

ROR2 Tier List Breakdown
In 2026, I won’t just rank characters by how they feel on “Rainstorm” difficulty – with the introduction of “Eclipse,” they have to be viable for that as well.
Characters with natural healing (like Seeker) or high mobility (like Loader) naturally rise to the top because they can bypass the hardest modifiers the game throws at you. I will go in-depth in my character analysis below, but first, if you’re in a hurry, here’s the “at a glance” setup:
S-Tier: Loader, Railgunner, Seeker, False Son, Void Fiend
A-Tier: Bandit, Captain, Engineer, CHEF, Acrid, Mercenary
B-Tier: Huntress, MUL-T, Artificer
C-Tier: REX, Commando, Heretic
S-Tier

Loader

Loader is still the strongest survivor in the game and remains pure adrenaline to play. Her mobility is unmatched, allowing her to finish stages in record time.
Her “Scrap Barrier” passive gives her a shield every time she hits an enemy, which makes her incredibly tanky.
As a result, this year she is the go-to pick for speedrunning Eclipse 8 because she can ignore most floor hazards by just swinging through the air.
Railgunner

If you can aim, Railgunner is broken. She turns all critical hit chance into critical damage, meaning her scaling is predictable and high.
Her “Cryo-charge” is vital for freezing bosses in place, giving you breathing room during chaotic late-game loops. She stays in S-tier because she can one-shot most elites before they even get close.
Seeker

Since the latest update revamp, Seeker has become a top-tier powerhouse. Her “Sojourn” ability is no longer just a flight tool – it is the best way to skip the Moon pillars and reach the final boss instantly.
Her “Meditate” mechanic was simplified to be faster, making her healing more reliable in high-pressure fights. In co-op, her ability to revive a dead ally is a literal game-changer.
False Son

False Son is the king of health scaling. Because he gains power from HP-boosting items like Bison Steak or Infusion, he becomes an unkillable juggernaut very quickly.
His “Laser of the Father” deals massive damage that pierces through enemies. He is ranked here because he has the highest “effective health” in the game, making him very forgiving for newer players.
Note: His unlock is special: you must defeat False Son as a boss with the Halcyon Seed in inventory to purify him, thereby unlocking him.
Void Fiend

Void Fiend is perfect because he has no real weaknesses. He has a built-in heal to cleanse debuffs and a corrupted form that deals some of the highest DPS in the game.
Managing his corruption meter takes practice, but once you learn to balance it, he can solo almost any challenge.

A-Tier
These survivors are strong and can easily clear a run, but they usually need a few specific items to truly dominate – or you investing more time mastering them.
Bandit

Bandit is the definition of a high-risk, high-reward survivor. He’s all about stealth, critical hits, and precise execution. You can’t just spam abilities here – timing and positioning matter.
His Backstab passive makes critical hits from behind a core part of his gameplay, and chaining kills with cooldown resets lets you keep the damage rolling nonstop. Used right, Bandit feels unstoppable – wiping mobs, resetting skills, and vanishing before the counterattack lands.
The stealth skill gives him breathing room when things get ugly, and his hemorrhage debuff melts stronger enemies fast. Skilled Bandit players can juggle stealth, crits, and cooldown resets in a loop that’s basically endless aggression with zero downtime.
Captain

Captain is the ultimate hybrid – a mix of support and heavy firepower. His abilities call in orbital strikes, supply beacons, and automated defenses straight from his ship, the UES Safe Travels.
His Orbital Probes are devastating when timed well, and his Supply Beacons can heal allies or zap enemies for crowd control. Add the Microbots for defense and his Vulcan Shotgun for close-range combat, and you’ve got a survivor that can do it all.
Captain rewards strategic thinking. You can dictate the pace of fights, set up defensive zones, or just drop beacons mid-chaos for clutch survivability. If you like playing support in co-op or leading the charge solo, Captain belongs in your roster.
Engineer
Engineer plays completely differently from anyone else in the game. He’s all about planning, positioning, and letting his gadgets do the heavy lifting.
His turrets copy your items, which means they scale ridiculously well once you start stacking. Combine that with his Bubble Shield, and you can hold ground like no other survivor.
Playing Engineer turns Risk of Rain 2 into a tactical defense game – drop turrets, pop shields, and watch everything walk into your trap. With good item synergy, you can go fully offensive or build an unbreakable fortress. Either way, he’s one of the safest picks in the entire game.
Mercenary
Mercenary is a fast-paced melee survivor who feels like playing a Souls boss on turbo mode. His Laser Sword and Eviscerate combo make him lethal in close-range fights, while his double jump and dash keep him nearly untouchable.
He’s not easy to master – you’ll need to stay in motion and manage cooldowns smartly – but once you do, Mercenary can wipe mobs faster than most ranged characters. The flow of chaining dashes, slicing enemies, and dodging hits makes him one of the most satisfying survivors in the game.

CHEF
CHEF has seen a massive rise in the rankings. Following the “Survivor Revamp” patch, his cleavers now auto-return and deal double damage on the way back.
His “Yes, CHEF!” special allows him to ignite or freeze entire rooms at once. He is now a high-performance damage dealer who excels at clearing the new, denser monster waves found in later stages.
Acrid
Acrid remains one of the most consistent choice for Eclipse 8 runs. His poison damage is percentage-based, meaning it scales with the enemy’s health.
This makes him incredibly effective against the massive HP bars of the newer bosses. You can just “poison and run,” which is a safe, albeit slower, way to win.

B-Tier
B-Tier characters of ROR2 are average ones. They have a difficult learning curve and will require a lot of dedication before you master them.
Huntress
Huntress is the ultimate “glass cannon.” She is fast and easy to play because of her auto-aim, but she has the lowest base health in the game.
This year, many of the newer enemies have “hitscan” or fast projectile attacks that can kill her instantly if you make one mistake.

MUL-T
MUL-T is a tank, but his lack of vertical mobility is a problem on the newer, taller maps like Solutional Haunt.
While his “Power Mode” with dual nailguns deals incredible damage, he often gets stuck in the terrain or overwhelmed by flying enemies if you don’t find a movement item early.
Artificer
Artificer is an elemental powerhouse, but she is slow. Her “Ion Surge” allows her to stay in the air, but her primary attacks rely on a cooldown system rather than an ammo system.
This can lead to moments where you have no way to defend yourself while waiting for your fireballs to recharge.
C-Tier
The C-tier survivors that I have ranked in this ROR2 tier list are not worth your time. They have a very high difficulty learning curve & are hardly high-reward characters.
Heretic
Heretic is a secret survivor — powerful, but tricky to use. You’ll need to collect all four Heresy items to unlock her, and she comes with huge upsides and serious downsides.
She’s got flight, triple jump, massive damage potential, and devastating abilities that can wipe groups instantly. But the trade-off is harsh — negative health regeneration. You’ll constantly fight against your own HP bar unless you build around healing items.
Playing Heretic is like playing on hard mode. High ceiling, high punishment, and plenty of bragging rights if you master her.
REX
REX is in a tough spot in the 2026 meta. Many of his best moves require him to spend his own health.
On higher difficulties like Eclipse, where healing is reduced and permanent damage is a factor, REX often accidentally kills himself. He is a high-risk character with a reward that simply isn’t high enough anymore.
Commando
Commando isn’t bad; he’s just basic. He has no built-in “big” move. He relies entirely on the items he finds. If you get lucky with Proc items like daggers and missiles, he is a god. If you get bad items, he has no way to carry the run on his own.

Final Thoughts
Risk of Rain 2’s survivors each bring their own flavor to the chaos, and there’s no truly “bad” pick if you know how to play them.
But if you’re aiming for the strongest, most consistent runs in at the moment, S- and A-tier survivors like Bandit, Railgunner, and Loader are your best bet.
Experiment, find your rhythm, and see which one best fits your play style. Then, keep in mind that the right items, timing, and a bit of chaos management can make even Commando feel godlike…
