Disney Dreamlight Valley: Beginners Guide [Tips & Tricks to Play Better]

Disney Dreamlight Valley is an in-depth game with a lot of details and various ways to progress. This can make it more challenging for newer players, due to the sheer amount of information.

If you are just starting out, this Disney Dreamlight Valley beginner’s guide is for you.

In this guide, I’ll go through some of the best tips and tricks that will improve your experience in the game and allow you to avoid some basic mistakes.

1. Don’t Ignore Friendship Levels

Friendship is an essential part in Disney Dreamlight Valley. Higher friendship levels unlock new quests and items essential for progressing in the game.

Maui Friendship increased to level 2.

Here are some tips to ensure you’re not missing out on friendship early on:

  • Always have daily discussions with each NPC. They provide a significant amount of friendship EXP.
  • Try and give as many gifts as possible. Some NPCs require simple gifts, like flowers or easy-to-make foods. If you can make it, go for it as the EXP rewards are too good to ignore.
  • Always have an NPC with you to hang out while you’re doing stuff around the village. Whether that’s farming, or simply exploring, NPC gain EXP for every simple thing that you do.

2. Invite New Characters

One of the first things you’ll unlock after following the story quest is the castle. Located just above the village, this castle is the way to invite new characters.

Whenever you’ve got dreamlight to spare, try and use it to progress through the castle. Each character unlocked brings their own quests, items, and unique rewards that help you progress in Disney Dreamlight Valley.

3. Clean up Thorns

Clean up thorns in Disney Dreamlight Valley.

When starting out, you’ll notice a lot of thorns around the village. Gathering them is extremely easy, and they can drop some valuable items like Dream and Night shards.

These respawn over time, so make sure to gather them whenever you see them.

4. Don’t Ignore Fishing

Fishing at a gold hotspot in Disney Dreamlight Valley.

Fishing is a great way to make money in the early game. Whenever you see a golden or blue hotspot, go for it.

It takes a few seconds and you can sell your trophies for a hefty price at Goofy’s shack.

5. Don’t Spend All Your Dreamshards

If you’re missing some dreamlight, you might be tempted to use your dreamshards to craft it. However, make sure to always keep some dreamshards around.

This is because some quests require dreamshards to complete and they can be hard to gather.

6. Prioritize Daily Dreamlight Duties

Daily Dreamlight Duties (first tab from the left).

Dreamlight is an essential currency in Disney Dreamlight Valley for unlocking new biomes, inviting characters to the village, and overall progressing the game.

One of the easiest and most consistent ways of gaining dreamlight is via daily tasks.

These are simple quests like changing your outfit or farming three crops that reset daily. Try and keep an eye out on these and complete them whenever possible.

7. Upgrade your inventory

Inventory management is an essential part of Disney Dreamlight Valley. While you can add a lot of chests to your home, it’s not the most convenient way to manage your inventory.

Instead, try and upgrade your backpack. This can be done by accessing your inventory and upgrading it via the bottom of the screen. The first upgrades are fairly cheap and I highly recommend getting them as soon as possible.

If unsure, consider checking our guide on how to increase storage in Disney Dreamlight Valley.

8. Keep a Few Gems Handy

When mining, you’ll occasionally find some rare gems. While it can be tempting to sell them to Goofy for the sweet cash immediately, I recommend keeping a few of each gem in a chest.

There will be quests later down the line asking you to hand over multiple copies of each gem. If you have no stockpile, gathering them from scratch will take a while, especially with bad RNG.

9. Repair Wells

Repaired Well in Disney Dreamlight Valley.

Wells are the way to teleport around Disney Dreamlight Valley. They are cheap to repair and are a huge quality of life feature.

Instead of running back and forth from the beach, you can just teleport there if you’ve repaired the local well.

Whenever you find one and have spare money, repairing it can be extremely helpful.

10. Manage your Stamina

It is important to keep in mind that you don’t have infinite stamina. In the early game, you can restore stamina either by entering your house or by eating something.

If you’ve repaired wells and don’t mind teleporting back and forth, restoring stamina in your house is a great option. However, the game also gives you a wide variety of fruit, including apples and berries.

You can keep a stack of apples in your inventory and eat them whenever you need the extra energy. It only takes 3-4 apples to get you to full stamina in the early levels.

Later down the line, cooking is going to be your best friend for stamina. Don’t forget to check our guide on how to cook each dish in Disney Dreamlight Valley.
