Hogwarts Legacy: How to Learn the Unforgivable Curses

There are three Unforgivable Curses in Hogwarts Legacy and the only way to learn them is by completing a certain series of sidequests given by Sebastian Sallow.

Specifically, the three curses are Crucio, Imperio, and Avada Kedavra and they can be unlocked by progressing Sebastian Sallow’s questline starting with “In the Shadow of the Undercroft”.

Also, it’s important to note that unlocking the Unforgivable Curses is optional. Players can ignore these quests, or even complete them and refuse to learn these spells.

However, there is no reason to avoid learning them as there is no negative fame or other debuffs in Hogwarts Legacy associated with the Unforgivable Curses.

In this guide, I will explain how to learn all three Unforgivable Curses in Hogwarts Legacy to give players the chance to practice the Dark Arts.

Crucio can be learned while completing the “In the Shadow of the Study” quest given by Sebastian Sallow.

This quest is unlocked right after completing the “In the Shadow of the Bloodline” quest.

The quest has players exploring Salazar Slytherin’s scriptorium inside Hogwarts and its main puzzle involves unlocking certain Slytherin locks. Consider checking out our relevant guide for more details on how to unlock these locks and complete the quest.

The Cruciatus Curse, also known as Crucio, curses the target causing them to take damage over time. Additionally, all attacks on that enemy while Crucio is active will deal increased damage.

How to Learn Imperio in Hogwarts Legacy

Players can learn Imperio by progressing Sebastian Sallow’s questline until they get the “In the Shadow of Time” quest.

This quest is unlocked right after completing the “In the Shadow of Discovery” quest.

For this quest, players will have to explore an ancient catacomb near Feldcroft. The main puzzle in this quest involves moving skeleton piles with Accio/Wingardium Leviosa to open doors.

Consider checking out our in-depth guide on how to complete “In the Shadow of Time” and find a way through the barricade in the catacombs.

Imperio makes the affected enemy turn into an ally and attack other enemies. This is ideally used on stronger enemies, such as trolls.

How to Learn Avada Kedavra in Hogwarts Legacy

Last but not least, Avada Kedavra can be unlocked during the “In the Shadow of the Relic” quest, given by Sebastian Sallow at the end of this questline.

Additionally, players will need to progress the main story until they reach the “Prepare for your O.W.L.S” quest, while also being at least level 28. This quest features a similar puzzle to the Imperio quest, so players shouldn’t have any trouble completing it.

Don’t forget to check out our guide on how to complete “In the Shadow of the Relic”, which dialogue option to choose to unlock Avada Kedavra, and how to use this curse effectively.

As for its effect, Avada Kedavra instantly kills the targeted enemy, regardless of their health.
