Don’t Starve Together Tier List for Solo Play [2026 Update]

It seems absurd to want to play a game titled “Don’t Starve Together” alone… but we’ve all been there and done that (and some are still doing it).

The landscape of the game has shifted dramatically, as the Skill Trees have finally completed for the vast majority of the cast. This has resulted in a meta flip – hence the need for an update to this article (and completely different rankings compared to last year).

Characters that used to be mediocre are now powerhouses, and some old favorites have slipped down the ranks because they simply require too much maintenance for a single player to manage.

I share with you my updated DST solo play tier list for these year. While these rankings work for multiplayer, I am focusing strictly on how these survivors handle the pressure when there is no one else around to save them.

S-Tier: Solo Survival Superstars

CharacterStats
MaxwellHealth: 75
Hunger: 150
Sanity: 200
WoodieHealth: 150
Hunger: 150
Sanity: 200
WandaHealth: 60 (Time)
Hunger: 175
Sanity: 200
WillowHealth: 150
Hunger: 150
Sanity: 120

There’s more to this than just the base stats, though – so read on for a few thoughts I have about each of these characters and why I consider them to be the best.

Maxwell

Maxwell

The shadow puppet master now reigns supreme in solo play, in my opinion. With his enhanced Duelists and shadow minions, Maxwell excels in resource gathering and boss battles alike, despite his laughable health.

His recent rework has propelled him to the top, making him a versatile powerhouse in both combat and base management, though.

Spend time unlocking his puppet-related skills; they make a world of difference. Also, always keep healing items around to offset his low health.

If you used to stay away from him – just give him a chance during your solo runs: you will see he’s really good actually!

Woodie

Woodie

If you are surprised to see Woodie in S-Tier, you haven’t played him since his skill tree update! Previously a B-tier lumberjack, Woodie is now a map-rushing monster.

His skill tree allows him to master his curse. Specifically, the Weregoose form can now walk on water and move at blistering speeds. This lets you map out the entire world in the first few days without building a single boat.

His Werebeaver form destroys forests in seconds, and his Weremoose offers combat defense. He has gone from a “selfish” character to the ultimate solo survivalist who can be anywhere, anytime.

Wanda

wanda character art dont starve together

Time truly is on Wanda’s side – she can bend it, break it, and use it to hammer bosses into oblivion.

Once you invest in her skill tree, particularly the branches that mitigate her “Old Age” penalties and boost her Alarming Clock damage, she becomes capable of outmaneuvering almost any threat.

Her low base health is the biggest challenge, but if you manage her watches correctly, she shrugs off hits that would kill anyone else. In a solo run, her ability to teleport instantly back to base or a boss arena is priceless.

Willow

willow

Willow has seen a massive resurgence, even though she used to be a liability until recently.

Her skill tree has turned her into a solo tank – her trusty bear, Bernie, can now be upgraded to grow in size, taunt enemies, and tank bosses while you deal damage from afar.

Also, her affinity with fire makes her immune to overheating in Summer, and her “Ember” skills allow her to deal massive Area of Effect (AOE) damage to crowds of spiders or hounds.

When you play alone, you don’t have a tank friend, so having a giant teddy bear do it for you is S-Tier material.

A-Tier Characters

CharacterStats
WortoxHealth: 200
Hunger: 175
Sanity: 150
WigfridHealth: 200
Hunger: 120
Sanity: 120
WickerbottomHealth: 125
Hunger: 150
Sanity: 250
WurtHealth: 150
Hunger: 200
Sanity: 150
WendyHealth: 150
Hunger: 150
Sanity: 200
WinonaHealth: 150
Hunger: 150
Sanity: 200

I will go a bit faster through these ones, highlighting their main strengths and weaknesses.

Wortox

The soulful imp’s teleportation provides clever survival mechanics. Collecting souls from monsters keeps you healed and mobile, while teleportation opens up the map for quick resource runs, and he essentially never needs healing salves.

His skill tree now allows for better soul management, but he still burns through food faster than other characters. In a solo world where you have to gather every berry yourself, that hunger drain can be a nag.

Wigfrid

The Valkyrie is a combat powerhouse. Her battle hymns and passive health regeneration ensure she remains a force against the wilderness.

Her Elding Spear skill tree upgrade gives her weapons that rival late-game gear early on. However, her meat-only diet forces you to constantly hunt, which takes time away from base building.

Wickerbottom

The librarian is fantastic, especially with her bookcase and ability to control the environment. She can grow food instantly and summon tentacles to fight for her, making her almost unbeatable in terms of utility.

However, she drops to A-Tier for solo play because managing her books and sanity requires a lot of multitasking. Unlike Woodie or Maxwell who can somewhat “autopilot,” Wickerbottom demands your full attention to maximize her potential.

Wurt

Wurt has quietly become one of the strongest characters in the game. Her skill tree finally gave her what she needed: the Amphibian trait. This makes her immune to wetness penalties and allows her to keep items dry.

Add to that her ability to summon an army of Royal Merm Guards who chop trees, mine rocks, and fight bosses for you, and she feels like a tankier version of Maxwell. Her only downside is the strict vegetarian diet, which can be annoying and more difficult to manage.

Wendy

Accompanied by her spectral sister Abigail, Wendy excels in crowd control.

With her skill tree, you can buff Abigail to apply elemental effects or hit harder. Wendy is the best character for “lazy” players (and I mean that as a compliment).

Abigail handles spiders, bees, and hounds without you lifting a finger. She sits in A-Tier because late-game bosses can still wipe Abigail out quickly if you aren’t careful, leaving Wendy vulnerable.

Winona

Winona used to be mediocre, but her skill tree fixed her biggest flaw: mobility. Her new “Portability” skills allow her to pick up her catapults and generators and move them instantly. This means you can set up a “kill zone” anywhere on the map in seconds.

For a solo player, having automated turrets to handle hound waves or bosses is a luxury that frees you up to focus on other things. She is the engineer of choice this year.

B-Tier

CharacterStats
WolfgangHealth: 200
Hunger: 200
Sanity: 200
WormwoodHealth: 150
Hunger: 150
Sanity: 200
WebberHealth: 175
Hunger: 175
Sanity: 100
WarlyHealth: 150
Hunger: 250
Sanity: 200
WX-78Health: 125
Hunger: 125
Sanity: 150

Now let’s get a bit more in-depth and see what makes these characters special. Or, better said – mediocre.

Wolfgang

It kind of hurts to put the strongman this low, but here’s why I do it: while he deals incredible damage, maintaining his “Mightiness” requires him to eat constantly and lift weights.

In multiplayer, friends feed Wolfgang so he can fight. In solo play, you spend half your time cooking just to keep your stats up. He is great for boss fights, but exhausting for day-to-day survival.

Wormwood

His farming abilities are unparalleled, and he can craft armor from his own body.

But his inability to heal from food remains a massive hurdle for solo players. You have to rely on honey poultices or specialized items to heal, which adds a layer of difficulty that other characters don’t have.

Webber

The spider boy is fun if you want to play a different game entirely. Being able to befriend spiders and build a base inside a nest is unique.

However, his low sanity and the fact that “good” mobs (like Pigs and Bunnymen) attack him on sight makes map traversal annoying.

Warly

The chef provides the best buffs in the game, but his portable crockpot takes time to set up, and his picky eating habits (he remembers what he ate and gets less hunger from it) are a nightmare when you are alone and just want to eat a stack of berries to survive.

WX-78

The robot is versatile with his circuits, allowing for speed boosts or night vision. However, he lacks a specific “gimmick” that breaks the game like Maxwell’s shadows or Woodie’s transformations. He is a solid, middle-of-the-road pick who needs to watch out for rain.

C-Tier

CharacterStats
WesHealth: 75
Hunger: 75
Sanity: 75
WalterHealth: 130
Hunger: 110
Sanity: 200

Here’s why I think that these characters are the worst for solo play in DST!

Wes

The silent mime remains in the game’s hard mode, offering a significant challenge to solo players with his lower stats and lack of vocal warnings. Probably the most difficult character to play in the entire DST universe.

Walter

Walter has a unique slingshot and a portable tent/dog named Woby. But his weakness is fatal for solo play: he loses Sanity when he takes health damage.

If you get cornered by a boss alone, you will go insane instantly, spawning Nightmare Creatures on top of the boss you are already fighting. It’s a recipe for disaster.

Finally, make sure you get the best of the best to enjoy this game (and more demanding ones): here’s my list of the best gaming laptops with 64GB RAM.

Wrapping up

Now you have a clear picture of the Don’t Starve Together solo landscape for 2026. The introduction of full skill trees for characters like Woodie and Wurt has completely shaken up the rankings, proving that utility and mobility often beat raw damage when you are surviving on your own.

If you have a different favorite, or if you think I was too harsh on Wolfgang, I’d love to hear about it – drop a comment below!
