D&D’s Dragonshard and Demon Stone Join Steam’s RPG Hall of Fame with Modern Upgrades

Two pillars of early-2000s Dungeons & Dragons video game history, Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone and Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard are returning to modern PCs in mid-August this year.

The move brings the cult-favorite games – one a cinematic action-RPG and the other a hybrid real-time strategy and dungeon crawler – back into the spotlight for a new generation, just as renewed interest in classic RPGs has surged with recent re-releases like Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights.

Demon Stone, first released in 2004, pairs hack-and-slash party combat with a story penned by fantasy author R.A. Salvatore, and features voice acting by Patrick Stewart and Michael Clarke Duncan.

This adventure is set in the lands of the Forgotten Realms, where perilous evil and great heroes are enveloped by magic, prophecy, and mystery. You control a party of three – Fighter, Sorcerer and Rogue – on a quest to right a great wrong and change the path of the future.

Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard

Dragonshard (2005) broke ground as the first real-time strategy game set in D&D’s Eberron universe, blending large-scale tactical warfare with RPG progression and multi-layered dungeon exploration.

As players direct troops over the land, they also plunge smaller, hero-led parties below ground to an RPG-modeled world of beasts, battles and bounty.

Experience and items gained in this underworld result in great powers and abilities above ground. Using magic, weaponry and skilled maneuvers, players command armies from varying races to control, protect – or destroy – the powerful Heart of Siberys.

Re-release goodness

Both titles have been updated for their Steam debut, with widescreen support, improved performance, and modern controller compatibility. The new versions aim to address the technical issues that kept the originals locked away on older hardware, while preserving the spirit and challenge of their tabletop inspirations.

SNEG’s revival of Demon Stone and Dragonshard coincides with a surge of nostalgia for D&D video games, as fans await new projects and revisit the genre’s roots.

While not as widely known as giants like Baldur’s Gate II or Icewind Dale, both titles have developed loyal followings for their innovative mechanics and memorable fantasy settings.
