Best RPGs with Job Systems [2025 Edition]

I love playing RPGs and I enjoy those really complex ones with job systems that allow you to truly create unique characters that really feel your own.

And since I’m not the only one enjoying this type of game, I’m here today to share the absolute best RPGs with job systems that you should try in 2025. I have personally selected these games and I am sure you will truly love them all, from more classic titles to recently-released ones.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is a tactical RPG released in November 2022 that’s a sequel to the fan-favorite Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, coming with improved graphics and audio, and a unique new story to unfold

As for jobs, the game calls them classes and has 18 basic classes, six demihuman races, and 18 different types of monster units.

There’s a wide variety of options available and players are free to experiment in any way that they like.

Chained Echoes is a turn-based JRPG released in December 2022. With a complex and rich story full of twists and turns, and an amazing world to explore full of details and sidequests, Chained Echoes is a must-try for any JRPG fan.

In terms of jobs, they are called classes instead but serve the same purpose. There are 12 different classes and they allow each character to try out unique builds. For more details, consider checking out our list of all the classes in Chained Echoes.

Crystal Project

Crystal Project is a Metroidvania RPG released in March 2022 that’s famous for its self-guided gameplay system. Instead of following a set story with quests, players are free to explore, seek treasure and crystals, and pretty much go anywhere they wish to go.

There is no clear sense of direction, similar to Dark Souls games, and thus there is no ‘right’ path that players are forced to follow.

As for jobs, also known as classes, the Crystal Project has 24 options to choose from, from the basic Warrior and Rogue to the more unique Valkyrie and Mimic.

Final Fantasy V

Final Fantasy V is a class-based JRPG originally released in 1992 and re-released with modern graphics and audio in 2021.

As one of the best Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy V offers a simple but immersive storyline and allows for great creativity with its job system.

With more than 20 different classes, there are options for everyone based on which elemental crystal you want to focus on.

Octopath Traveler 2

Octopath Traveler 2 one of the best RPGs with a job system overall. Released in February 2023, Octopath Traveler 2 is considered by many fans an improvement over the original.

The game follows the distinct stories of eight characters and brings them together to one unique ending that leaves many fans in awe.

In terms of jobs, the game includes eight basic jobs and four more specialized ones. When equipped to a character, that character maintains their original job’s skills while also gaining access to the new job’s skills.

This allows players to create some amazing combos, with some mentioned in our recent guide on the best secondary jobs in Octopath Traveler 2.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name

Like a Dragon Gaiden The Man Who Erased His Name

Moving to something a bit different from the recommendations above, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, from the Yakuza series, comes with a traditional role-playing game job system that gives players plenty of options to choose from.

The game features intense combat in diverse settings, offering two distinct styles: the aggressive Yakuza and the precise, gadget-enhanced Agent style. Players can switch between these styles to defeat enemies.

The game’s world, including Sotenbori and Yokohama, is rich with activities like karaoke, cabaret clubs, and a lot more.

If you need help romancing the characters in the game, we have guides on how to romance Ai, Kokoro, or Kaname.

Bravely Default II

Bravely Default 2

Guided by fate, it’s up to you to stop the forces that threaten these heroes and all of Excillant.

In the game, each character can exhibit both a primary and secondary job class, with each job specializing in different abilities. Combining jobs allow you to handle two abilities simultaneously.

You can create an all-rounder balanced in offense and defense, or perhaps a character that specializes in magic. Your tactics and how you develop each character are up to you.

Etrian Odyssey HD

Etrian Odyssey

Etrian Odyssey HD remasters the timeless adventure that many of us grew up playing.

Build a party of explorers from nine different character classes – create a woodland survivalist, shield-bearing protector, whip-wielding dark hunter, and more.

Scour through the dungeon’s many layers and fend off the unknown to discover the truth behind the Yggdrasil Labyrinth.

No matter if you have played the original or not, this HD remaster is a must play. Especially if you’re looking for amazing RPGs with job systems.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

This is one of the best RPGs of all time, in my opinion, and clearly an amazing options when it comes to epic-scale games with job systems.

This turn-based RPG game has been around for a few years, but it has aged well and is still playable, offering a lot to RPG fans. It gets bonus points if you’re into Dungeons and Dragons, as it’s one of the best D&D games for PC, but also on Switch (and basically all platforms it’s available on).

A must play classic!

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

FINAL FANTASY XII THE ZODIAC AGE

The Zodiac Age edition of FF XII introduces a robust job system layered onto the original game’s license board – and this is a solid enough reason to have two Final Fantasy games on the list.

There are 12 jobs (each themed on a Zodiac sign, like Knight, Monk, Black Mage, etc.), and each character can eventually choose two jobs to combine, giving tons of customization options to fans of the job system in games.

While you’re initially locked into chosen jobs, selecting complementary skill sets for each character and unlocking licenses grants you significant freedom to customize your party’s abilities and gear specializations. And if you haven’t played it already, do so ASAP!

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Fire Emblem Three Houses

Although this is only available on the Nintendo Switch, it’s a must have and must play if you’re serious about role playing games and highly customizable classes.

Here, characters can be freely reclassed into dozens of different classes (like Fighter, Mage, Pegasus Knight, Assassin, etc.) as they meet skill proficiency requirements.

By teaching your students different skill areas, you can change any unit’s class and carry over the skills they’ve mastered in previous classes. In fact, when a class is mastered it grants powerful abilities that can be equipped by that character even in a different class.

This means your sword-wielding mercenary can learn some magic or your healer can pick up archery – allowing you to mix abilities from multiple classes and constantly tweak your team for the best combinations.

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen

Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen

An classic action RPG with a surprisingly deep class system (called “Vocation” in the game). You have nine to choose from: from basic Fighter, Strider, Mage to advanced Ranger, Assassin, Mystic Knight and more – which you can swap between at will by visiting an inn.

Each vocation has its own active skills and passive augments; notably, any Augments you learn (permanent passive skills) can be used by your character under any vocation. This encourages you to train in multiple classes to collect useful abilities – for example, you might level a Mage to get a magic buff augment for your Mystic Knight, or level Warrior to gain strength boosts for a Ranger.

It’s way cooler than it might sound, so make sure to try the game and see for yourself!

Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark

Fell Seal Arbiters Mark Character build

An indie tactical RPG love-letter to games like FFT, Fell Seal boasts a deep class system with over 20 classes and 200 abilities to unlock. Yup, plenty of customization options!

Each character can equip a main class (determining primary skills and stat growth) and a sub-class, plus assign multiple passive and counter abilities learned from any classes.

There are classic roles like Mercenary, Wizard, Assassin, and Knight, as well as exotic hybrid classes – and you unlock new classes by leveling prerequisite ones. All in all though, with plenty of combos and hybrid jobs available, Fell Seal gives you granular control to craft powerful, one-of-a-kind builds for your squad.
