Overall, there is a wide variety of changes between the two games, some of which are major and game-changing, while others are smaller and feature quality-of-life upgrades.

All Changes Between Counter Strike 2 and CS:GO

Without further delay, here’s everything that’s changed in CS2.

Major Changes

Counter Strike 2 vs CS:GO - all changes and differences - New molotov animation.

The following major changes have been the major advertising point of Counter Strike 2. All these make it feel like a new game and offer a more unique experience to players. Here are all the major changes in CS2 from CS:GO:

  • Visually reworked maps – All maps are visually reworked and feature new textures and lighting. There are no changes in terms of objects, peaks, and angles; every change is purely visual
  • Smokes briefly dissipate when shot – Whenever you shoot or throw a grenade at an existing smoke, the smoke effect will dissipate temporarily
  • Smoke and fire naturally expand – Instead of creating a static field of smoke/fire, they expand more naturally to capture all of the surrounding area and seem more natural
  • Improved server performance – One of the biggest changes in Counter Strike 2 is the improved server performance. Overall, the server tick rate was increased, which means the servers understand exactly when a player moves or shoots and they react faster (there was a small delay in this in CS:GO, which pushed many players to play only on FACEIT servers)
  • New Premier Mode – CS2 introduces a new ranked mode with higher stakes than competitive mode. While you can still play competitive mode, with the same ranks as in CS:GO, there’s also premier mode which features a rating-based matchmaking that’s more accurate and rewarding. For more details, check out our CS2 competitive and premier mode guide.

The list of changes doesn’t end here, as there’s a wide variety of smaller changes too.

Smaller QoL Changes

Counter Strike 2 vs CS:GO - all changes and differences - Cooked chicken!

Other than the major changes listed above, Counter-Strike 2 features a wide variety of new animations and effects that can easily go unnoticed. Here are all the smaller quality-of-life changes in CS2:

  • You can see your legs if you look down
  • Molotovs reflect against the light when you’re outside and looking towards the sun
  • Swampy water moves around when you walk through it or when you shoot it
  • More satisfying glass-shattering animation
  • Chickens turn into Cooked Chickens if you throw a Molotov on them
  • The enemy gets fully electrified and you can see it when shooting with the Zeus
  • The fire from the Molotov is brighter and more colorful while also leaving ashes behind
  • The bomb explosion is significantly larger

These are smaller changes not listed in the patch notes, so it’s possible that I missed something. If you spot any new changes similar to the ones above, feel free to share them in the comments below.
