One of the best ways to spend your Lapis and XP points in Minecraft is by enchanting your Axe. And today we’re going to talk about the best axe enchantments in Minecraft.
Things will differ a bit based on the use you want for the Axe: while it is primarily used as a tool for cutting wood, the Axe is also the preferred weapon for many, in lieu of the traditional sword or other in-game weapons.
If you’re a ranged attacker type of player, make sure to also read our guide to the best Crossbow enchantments in Minecraft.
So, with all these in mind, let’s jump straight in and find out which are the best enchantments for Axes in Minecraft.
The Primary Axe Enchantments
First, we will start off with the enchantments that you should always have. These are extremely useful, no matter if you use the Minecraft Axe as a tool or a weapon. These “primary” axe enchantments are:
- Mending
- Unbreaking
- Efficiency
Mending uses the XP you pick up to repair your tools without costing you any materials which could get very expensive.
Unbreaking is another vital enchantment for any player as with it you can break more blocks before your axe breaks.
Efficiency is the third enchantment that every axe should have as it increases the speed you can break blocks (basically increasing attack damage)
(Note that this effect only applies to blocks the tool is supposed to be used for such as any wood-based blocks like logs, crafting tables, signs, doors, etc.)

The Secondary Axe Enchantments
Apart from the main enchantments above, we have two more that I consider “secondary.”
While these are not necessary by any means, they could prove helpful in the right situation.
The first of these is Silk touch. This enchant always drops the block that was mined instead of the resource, as it normally happens.
This isn’t super helpful for most blocks, but is really useful for bookshelves and campfires as instead of dropping books and coal they will instead drop themselves saving resources.
The other enchantment is Fortune, which increases the yields when breaking certain blocks.
Have in mind that for the axe, it only works on leaves and crops as it does not apply to logs.
One thing to note is that you can only have one of these enchants on a tool and not both as they conflict with each other.

The Combat Enchantments for Axes in Minecraft
Now we’re getting to the fun part! Since most people nowadays use the Axe as thior weapon of choice in the game, let’s see which are the best combat enhancements for axes in Minecraft!
The best combat axe enhancements are Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods.
The first one, Sharpness, will do extra damage to all mobs or players and is generally the best of the three for combat.
Smite is next, as it does extra damage to undead mobs which include zombies, skeletons, wither skeletons and even The Wither (or The Wither Storm if you have the mod installed).
The last one, Bane of Arthropods is probably one of the least useful of the three as it only increases damage to mobs such as spiders, bees, silverfish, or endermites.
Unfortunately, just like the silk touch and fortune, you can only have one of these on your tool at a time, so choose wisely.
And since we’re talking about weapons, I know that the Trident is one a player favorite. If that’s your case too, make sure to check out our previous guide on how to repair your Trident in Minecraft.
The “Enchantment”
There is one final “enchantment” that could be used for combat if you don’t want your enemy to be able to steal your axe. You could enchant it with the Curse of Vanishing.
When the Curse of Vanishing is applied to the axe, it will not drop when you die but will instead just disappear never to be seen again.
Good for PvP, bad for when you fall off a cliff. Your choice, depending on what type of game you’re playing.
