Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Best Dragon Type Pokemon

Dragon has been a fan-favorite Pokemon type since the first generation. It has been the type of some of the strongest Pokemon such as Dragonair, Salamence, and Flygon. Also, many legendaries have had the Dragon-type like Zekrom, Giratina, and Rayquaza.

Similar to the previous games, the Dragon-type has seen some love in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet with the return of many fan-favorite Pokemon and the addition of some amazing new ones.

If you’re interested in a more general guide that includes all types, consider checking out our list of the best new Pokemon introduced in Generation 9.

In this guide, I will list the best Dragon-type Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet and explain what makes them so strong.

9. Salamence

Salamence manages to shine in Scarlet and Violet due to the combination of its move Dragon Dance and its hidden ability Moxie.

Its solid defensive stats allow it to survive most attacks except Ice-type moves. If it manages to build up strength with Sword Dance, it can end up one-shotting the entire enemy team.

8. Dragapult

Dragapult, one of the best Ghost-type Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet, is also an amazing Dragon-type Pokemon exclusive to Pokemon Violet.

Primarily due to its high Speed and its type combination, Dragapult can deal with a variety of Pokemon easily before they even get the chance to attack.

7. Goodra

Goodra is one of the few defensive Pokemon on this list. It shines due to its high Special Defense while also packing solid Special Attack and HP stats.

With Tera types introduced in Scarlet and Violet, Goodra can combine its Hydration ability with a Water Tera type and another Rain Dance Pokemon. This way, it can transform into an insane water-attacker out of nowhere.

6. Hydreigon

Hydreigon has managed to rise on the list of the best Dragon-type Pokemon primarily due to its ability to Terastrallize.

Specifically, I highly recommend transforming into a Fire-type and having the ability Levitate to avoid Ground-type moves.

This way, Hydreigon will only be weak to Water and Rock-type moves, while being able to dish out solid damage.

5. Dragonite

As a Dragon/Flying-type Pokemon, Dragonite is known from the previous games due to its ability to one-shot enemies with Outrage or Hurricane.

In addition, its hidden ability Multiscale allows it to survive Ice-type attacks, despite being vulnerable (4x) to them.

As for how to get hidden abilities in Scarlet and Violet, we’ve got you covered. Make sure to check out our relevant guide.

4. Roaring Moon

Roaring Moon is the Paradox equivalent of Salamence exclusive to Pokemon Scarlet.

If it gets the chance to set up with Dragon Dance, its great Attack and Speed stats allow it to take down most enemy Pokemon easily.

In addition, similarly to other Paradox Pokemon, Roaring Moon can shine if equipped with Booster Energy, one of the strongest items in the game.

3. Baxcalibur

As a Dragon/Ice-type Pokemon, Baxcalibur manages to shine by combining its exceptionally high Attack stat with Sword Dance to one-shot even the toughest enemies.

Ideally, you want Baxcalibur to have a Jolly (+Speed, -Special Attack) nature, to ensure it hits both hard and fast.

2. Garchomp

Garchomp has been a fan-favorite Pokemon from the previous games due to its type combination. As a Dragon/Ground type, Garchomp can deal with almost any Pokemon by using moves such as Earthquake and Dragon Claw.

While its main huge weakness remains Ice (4x), players can Terastrallize it to ensure no enemy can take advantage of this.

1. Koraidon/Miraidon

The legendaries of Scarlet and Violet make their way to the top of this list due to their exceptionally high stats. They combine amazing Speed and Attack/Special Attack while also having solid defensive stats.

Also, while both are amazingly strong, one of them manages to come out on top. For more, check out our guide on Koraidon vs Miraidon and which one is better.

Conclusion

To sum up, that’s everything you need to know regarding the best Dragon-type Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet.

With the introduction of Paradox Pokemon and new Legendaries, the Dragon-type has received some amazing additions in Generation 9 that can shine in almost any PvE or PvP team.
