Killer Instinct Bringing Cross-Play Between Xbox, Windows 10, and Steam

Killer Instinct (2013) has been around for quite some time now. Breaking out as the star fighting game for Xbox One, the game eventually made its way to Windows 10 where PC players could try it out for free and fight against Xbox One players. At this year’s CEO – one of the biggest fighting game tournaments – it was announced that the game was officially coming to Steam.

In this post on the Killer Instinct official forums, community manager “rukizzel” details the upcoming 3.9 patch. In this content update, there will be additional matchmaking options that you can toggle to allow the game to find opponents on the Steam release. Of course, because the Steam version isn’t actually out yet, this is more of a placeholder and “official announcement” that Windows devices players will indeed be able to play against Steam players.

This is also more of a live test. The option for cross-play matchmaking will seemingly disappear and reappear at random times, according to rukizzel. Do not be alarmed – it’s just the developers working out the kinks in the background. This testing period will not affect regular matchmaking so don’t be afraid to FIGHT ON while the testing is underway.

For those already fighting their way through the Killer Instinct universe, patch 3.9 also contains a numerous amount of character rebalances and bug fixes. You can check out the full, detailed patch notes on the Ultra-Combo website.

The Steam version of Killer Instinct is planned for a 2017 release, and since there’s a only a couple months left, the Steam version should be here soon. Stay tuned and keep an eye on Ultra-Combo for more info as we get closer to the supposed release date!
