Kevin is easily one of Megabonk’s most absurd and entertaining unlockables. Unlike the usual items that give you stat buffs or neat bonuses, Kevin’s power is pure chaos and h e has a 25% chance to punch yourself every time you land a hit on an enemy.
So 1 in 4 hits is also a self-hit… which is why Kevin hates you.
Why would you want to have Kevin in your game/build, then? While it is a joke mechanic on the surface, there’s a catch: Kevin can’t actually kill your character. Still, playing him adds a layer of unpredictability to your runs and makes him a favorite for completionists who enjoy unlocking everything.
Which, believe it or not, isn’t easy to do, hence today’s article: how to unlock Kevin in your game. While the requirement might seem pretty straightforward – get 3 Leeching Crystals, it’s more luck-based and even more difficult than you imagine. Here’s what you need to do to unlock Kevin faster:
1. Narrow Down Your Item Pool

First of all, disable as many items as possible in the menu. This is crucial because Megabonk’s drop system pulls random loot from your unlocked pool. The fewer items you leave enabled, the higher your odds of seeing the Leeching Crystal in your runs.
This single step dramatically increases your success rate and probably the biggest and most important thing you should do.

2. Set Up Quick Reset
You’ll be restarting a lot, so go into your control settings and bind “Quick Reset.”
This lets you instantly restart a run without extra menus or delays, which is essential since success heavily depends on your spawn conditions and RNG.
3. Map and Mode Selection
Start your attempt on the Forest (Tier 1) map using the Turbo Mode Challenge.
This combo keeps each run short and fast-paced.
If things go wrong early, you can reset immediately without wasting time grinding through longer maps or higher tiers.
4. Picking Your Character and Build
You can technically use anyone, but the community generally favors characters with strong early clears:
- Megachad
- Sir Chadwell
- Sir Oofie
- Ninja
However, I personally recommend going with this Robinette build. It gives you the best chances of getting Kevin fast. Or at least getting him.
Weapon choice doesn’t matter much – prioritize something that can clear waves fast rather than focus on single targets. The goal is to farm Luck and open as many chests as possible, not to survive long boss fights.
5. Start and Reset Smart
As soon as the run begins, check your surroundings. If you don’t spawn near Moai Stones or Shady Dealers, reset immediately.
These two interactable types are your best sources of rare items – especially the Leeching Crystals you need – so there’s no point wasting a run without them nearby.

6. Build Luck and Farm Gold
Early game is all about stacking Luck and farming Gold (hence my recommended Robinette build).
Once your Luck stat reaches around 30–40% and you’ve got at least 200 gold, start opening every chest you can find. Each one gives you a new chance to pull a Leeching Crystal.
Don’t hoard gold at this moment, just spam open chests.
7. Manage the Item Pool During the Run
Whenever you pick up a blue-rarity item that isn’t the Leeching Crystal, immediately banish it from your pool.
This thins out the drop options and slightly raises your odds of getting more Leeching Crystals later in the run.
8. Know When to Reset
There’s no shame in cutting your losses. It’s actually recommended in this case, where grinding will play a major role in your success.
I recommend resetting when Chest prices climb above 1,500 gold. From that point on, it makes no sense to drag it out, as your chances of getting the required items are minimal.
Efficiency is key. The more attempts you can squeeze in per hour, the faster you’ll hit that lucky triple-drop run, so reset whenever you have to.
9. The Unlock
Once you’ve managed to collect three Leeching Crystals in a single run, Kevin unlocks automatically. No need to finish the map – the unlock is instant.
At that point, you’ll gain access to Kevin and his self-destructive sense of humor.
Why would you want Kevin, though?
It might seem that it makes no sense to have an item that hits you constantly. However, that also counts as a hit, meaning that it activates all on-hit effects you have equipped. While hitting others does the same thing, it’s the extra bit of nonsense that makes him interesting to have.
It is exactly this type of item that adds more fuel to the fire of those who believe that Vedinad and Dani are the same person.
Final Thoughts
Unlocking Kevin in Megabonk takes patience, quick resets, and a ton of luck. He’s a quirky addition rather than a powerhouse, but he’s part of what makes Megabonk so fun.
