Ever stumbled across a game that makes you do a double-take, not because of flashy graphics or a big studio name, but because you just can’t believe who made it (spoiler: a 12-year-old)?
That’s exactly what happened to me with Floors – a tense, bite-sized horror adventure game you can play for free right now on Itch.io or Scratch.
When you see “Scratch,” you know you can’t expect AAA quality here, but even with the few available tools on hand, this game’s developer managed to capture what matters the most in a video game: the essence.
Despite its minimalistic visuals and a basic concept, Floors still manages to offer the level of tension it was created to offer. Every mistake can end your run, and every new monster is a surprise (not always the good kind!).
But here’s what gets me: Floors was made by Everest, a 12-year-old whose first project was the weirdly addictive clicker, Ultra Button. Twelve years old! When I was that age, I was getting stuck at level two in Caesar 3, not scaring strangers online.
So… what is this game about?
You play as a shadowy little blob exploring a haunted hotel, climbing floor after floor with darkness at your heels. The main catch is that some doors are locked, some are guarded by monsters, and some locks are… big surprise… also guarded by monsters.
Your only way to deal with them? Hide in a closet – literally. And this is it! No elaborate backstory. No over-the-top mechanics. Just pure, honest gameplay – and it works.

You will get frustrated, you will learn what each monster does through trial and error mostly (and the info screen upon your death), but you will replay it over and over again just to beat it and reach the final floor. It’s addictive, it’s tense, it’s minimalistic and fun. And most important – it’s free to play.
If you’ve got 5-10 minutes to spare, do yourself (and a budding young developer) a favor: play Floors on Itch.io. Then come back and let me know – did you beat it, or did the monsters get you first?
And if you enjoy it, spread the word! A single share could make Everest’s day – and maybe inspire the next generation of indie devs, too.
PS: If you want something a bit more complex, you can learn more about this indie Zombie FPS coming this fall, or the psychological thriller Zero Escape.
