Cobblemon: What’s the Best Starter Pokémon? [Updated Guide]

When starting out in Cobblemon, you’ll be called to select your starter Pokemon. Players are able to choose any starter from generations 1-8, so it can be hard to find the best one.

In this guide, I will showcase the best starter Pokemon in Cobblemon and explain what makes it shine.

Overall, starter Pokemon can be found in the wild but are extremely rare. Due to that, the best starter Pokemon to choose from is simply your favorite one, since you’re going to have a hard time getting it otherwise.

Alternatively, the best starter Pokemon in the game is Mudkip since its typing makes it weak only to Grass. Also, it can deal with Grass-type Pokemon easily due to Ice Punch.

But let’s get a bit more in-depth with this guide, check out other options and everything else you should know based on the latest release of the mod.

Also, don’t forget to check out our relevant guide on a list of all starters in the game, and a full list of all Pokemon available in Cobblemon.

Best Starter Pokemon in Cobblemon

The best starter type Pokemon in Cobblemon is Mudkip.

In terms of typing, the best starter Pokemon in Cobblemon is Mudkip. While Mudkip is a Water-type Pokemon, its evolutions Marshtomp and Swampert are Water and Ground-type Pokemon.

This is one of the strongest type combinations in the game as it is only weak to Grass-type moves (4x). It is the only starter that’s weak to one type of move.

Given the mod’s current version-data, dual-typing like Water/Ground remains one of the strongest combinations for a starter. In the latest version, the devs explicitly “completely re-synced Pokémon move and stat data based on later games” which means move-sets, coverage and typings are more reliable.

Additionally, Swampert can learn Ice Punch, which is an ideal tool for dealing with Grass-type Pokemon. Overall, it has the tools to take down any Pokemon and survive anything, which is why it’s considered the best starter Pokemon in the game.

However, there’s one more thing to keep in mind while selecting your starter which is that starter Pokemon can be found in the wild but are extremely rare.

Thus, if you have a favorite starter Pokemon that you really want, regardless of type effectiveness, I recommend selecting that as you will have a hard time getting it otherwise.

Runner-ups & alternative considerations

If you don’t really have a favorite Pokemon and, for some reason, you don’t want to start with Mudkeep, here are a few other alternatives, based on various factors:

Aesthetic/theme-build: If you are building a themed base (say a Fire-type starter pool, or a “rare squad” aesthetic) then your favourite starter may make more sense than an “optimal” one.

World/Server config: Some servers adjust starter pools, rarity weights or even enable “all‐starters selectable” config. If spawn-rates or availability favour another typing, adapt accordingly.

Possible alternatives

  • A Fire-type starter might be a valid competitor if the early game you’re in has few Fire-weak opponents or biome disadvantage is minimal.
  • Consider starter lines which gain strong dual-typing or signature moves as per the latest version’s move-set sync. Check the latest spawn/move-set databases (community wikis, Reddit threads) if you want to be on top of things.

Bottom line: Mudkip is a safe “meta” pick, but not necessarily the only good pick.

How to Find Starter Pokemon in Cobblemon

As mentioned, players can find starter Pokemon in the wild in Cobblemon. For instance, I was lucky enough to find a Charmander roaming during the early stages of my playthrough, which was fairly easy to catch.

However, finding a starter is considered lucky and you shouldn’t expect to find them all in the wild easily.

With over 20 starter Pokemon in Cobblemon, and based on how rare they are to find, getting the one you want to can be extremely hard as it’s dependent on luck.

Due to that, it’s important to select your favorite starter when starting the game, as there’s no guarantee that you’ll get it later by finding it in the wild.

Wrapping up

To summarize, the best starter type in Cobblemon based on typing is Mudkip as it’s only weak to Grass and it can learn Ice Punch to deal with Grass-type Pokemon.

However, since starters are extremely hard to find in the wild, I recommend choosing your favorite one as you may never find it in the wild.

  1. Without having access to earthquake move, [current version of cobblemon (Cobblemon 1.3.2) doesn’t have TM’s, trainers etc. in it] Mudkip is one of the WORST choice you can make. Its just an attack pokemon with bunch of special attack moves. It has no any STAB attack move and because of that, its pretty useless.
Popplio in the other hand, whole different story.
