The Pyromancer focuses on building Heat and increasing damage through Flames in its kit. Spam Flames, increase Heat, and wreak havoc with the best Pyromancer build in Backpack Battles – recommended today.
So, let’s go through the best subclass and items for the Pyromancer and help you get the most out of it!
Why You’ll Love the Pyromancer
Pyromancer isn’t just a damage dealer, she’s a true thrill ride. You bank Heat by spending gold, then watch as your item effects and attack speed skyrocket. Whether you’re racing to clear rounds or focusing on boss control, few builds feel as explosive.
So, to begin with the obvious, here’s why you will love the Pyromancer and especially my recommended build:
- High burst damage: Flames stack fast, letting you melt enemies in seconds.
- Resilience through reincarnation: Dark Lantern and Phoenix give you do-overs when you overcommit.
- Customization: You decide whether to lean into crits, regeneration, or raw Heat generation.
Pyromancer Explained
The Pyromancer starts with the Fire Pit backpack and 2 Flames. Its unique effect is that it generates a Flame upon spending one gold when entering the shop and also grants 5 max HP for each Fire item in your bag.
As for the Flame, here’s how it works:
Flame: Gain 1 Heat at the start of each round; Each stack of Heat causes items to trigger 2% faster.
Best Pyromancer Subclass & Class Item
The best subclass for the Pyromancer is the Ashbringer and thus the best item is the Dark Lantern. You can select this item at the start of the 8th round and it comes with the following effects:
- Start of Battle: Lose 50% health
- Before Defeat: Reincarnate with 50% life and become invulnerable for 2 seconds
- On Reincarnation: Deal 7 damage for each Fire item and inflict 6 debuffs for each Dark item

Best Pyromancer Items
While there are various items you can pick up, let’s go through your top available options that are a must-have if you can get them.
- Phoenix: Grants an additional reincarnation on top of the Dark Larnern and further buffs the Heat effects. While you lose 10 HP whenever it attacks, this can be countered with other items.
- Heart Container: Grants regeneration to counter the Phoenix debuff
- Healing Herbs: Same as heart container
- Any Fire items: Fire items stack with your backpack’s bonus and are always welcome. Additionally, anything that increases Heat is useful.
- Topaz gems: They increase attack speed and overall increase your DPS
- Sun Armor: Best armor for this class as it stacks with other buffs
Also, for the late-game, aim for a Burning Sword (or more than one ideally) and a Draconic Orb to ensure critical hits.

By stacking Fire items, the Sun Armor, Burning Sword, and the Phoenix, you’ll have one of the best DPS builds in the game and be able to consistently clear runs.
Of course, everything depends on how lucky you can get with item drops in the store, so here’s a quick summary on how you should play round-by-round:
- Rounds 1–5: Stock Fire items and basic regen.
- Round 6–7: Pick up Topaz gems and Sun Armor if available.
- Round 8: Lock in Dark Lantern (Ashbringer).
- Rounds 9–12: Secure Phoenix and Heart Container.
- Rounds 13+: Hunt Burning Swords and Draconic Orbs.
If the shop gods aren’t kind, lean into healing and speed – 5 Heat stacks can carry you even without perfect crit gear.
Additional Tips from My Playtests
- Time your gold spends: Generating Flames early can give you a huge speed edge by Round 5.
- Stack regen items before you grab Phoenix. Those 10 HP hits add up.
- Watch your health bar closely once Dark Lantern kicks in. You’ll respawn automatically, but you need buffer to trigger it.
- Don’t ignore survivability. A straight glass-cannon Pyro dies fast if you get crowd-controlled.
