One of the obstacles players will have to deal with in Amnesia The Bunker is tripwire traps. One wrong step in Amnesia: The Bunker, and a tripwire goes off, making enough noise to bring the Beast straight to you.
These traps are easy to miss, especially in the dark, and the consequences of triggering one at the wrong moment can end your run fast.
The good news is that you can disarm them completely, and once you know how, the bunker becomes a much quieter place to survive.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how to disarm tripwire traps using the Chain Cutters (also known as Bolt Cutters), plus a few things about how traps work that most guides skip over entirely.
If you haven’t unlocked the Chain Cutters yet, check out our guide on how to get the Chain Cutters in Amnesia The Bunker. You’ll need to lift the tripwire, get the Wrench, and find the cells in the Prison area.
The Types of Tripwire Traps in Amnesia: The Bunker
Before getting into the disarming process, it’s worth knowing that not all tripwire traps are the same. There are three distinct types, actually!
- Explosive traps are rigged with a standard Grenade.
- Gas traps are rigged with a Gas Grenade.
- Fire traps are rigged with an incendiary Flare, placed directly over a puddle of Fuel.
Each type behaves differently when triggered, but they all share one important trait: tripping any of them will alert the Beast to its location.
Nearby traps are marked with a red X on your screen. Keep an eye out for those before walking into any room, especially when the lights are out.

How to Disarm Tripwire Traps in Amnesia the Bunker

The main function of the Chain Cutters (also referred to as Bolt Cutters in some contexts) is to open certain doors locked tightly with chains. However, as I mentioned above, they’re also your go-to tool for dealing with those three trap types.
Thus, you can disarm tripwire traps in Amnesia The Bunker by using the Chain Cutters tool and cutting the tripwire.
To disarm a tripwire trap, open your inventory and bring out the Cutters. Get as close to the tripwire as you can without activating it, and use the interact button to cut the wire. Here’s how that looks across platforms:
- PC: Left Mouse Button (LMB)
- PlayStation: Aim button, then the use button when prompted
- Xbox: View key, then the use button when prompted
Then, you can pick up the grenade or flare that was there and keep it in your inventory.
Keep in mind that this won’t work for most doors as they’ll have the tripwire on the opposite side and there’s no way to get on that side unless you open the door and trigger the trap. Instead, the Cutters will primarily help you cut tripwire traps that are on the ground.
Overall, it’s essential to disarm any traps you find if you want to navigate the bunker quietly and avoid the Beast.
Also, the first time you cut a tripwire with the Chain Cutters, you’ll unlock the Tinkerer Achievement and Trophy.

What If You Don’t Have the Cutters Yet?

The Cutters are a late-game item, so there’s a good stretch of the game where you’ll encounter traps you simply can’t disarm yet.
If that’s where you are, you’re not completely out of options. You can jump over a tripwire with a running start.
It requires a bit of precision, but it works and it keeps the trap intact and silent. It won’t disarm it, so the trap stays active for later, but it gets you past without triggering it.
Wrapping up
To sum up, that’s everything you need to know on how to disarm tripwire traps in Amnesia The Bunker.
Unlock the Cutters tool from the Cells room in the Prison area and use them to cut the tripwire in any booby trap you can find. Also, you can use the same tool to cut open certain chained doors in the game.
