The Hatch in Dead by Daylight is essential for Survivors – especially for those who know where to look for it. If you get there before the Killer does, you’re all set – but if the Killer beats you to it, they’ll slam it shut.
When Does the Hatch Spawn?
The Hatch’s appearance in Dead By Daylight is not random. It always follows the same rule, spawning only when one Survivor remains.
How do you know if you’re the last Survivor?
Keep an eye on the Survivor icons – A skull icon instead of their profile means they’re gone.
A hook icon means that the survivor is still alive – so wait until that turns into a skull too, to be considered out of play.
Disconnected players are considered dead once their icon changes to the disconnect symbol.
Once you see that final skull icon, it means that you’re the final Survivor and the Hatch will spawn, its doors wide open and emitting a distinct wind tunnel sound. We’ll get more into this sound clue later.

Where to Find the Hatch
For starters, the Hatch will only spawn on the ground floor, never on upper levels. This is true for all maps, except in the case of the Racoon City Police Station, where you might find it on the second floor.
If you find the Hatch on higher floors in other places, please comment below and let us all know!
Back to finding it in the game, now.
There are certain spots, depending on the map you’re playing, where the Hatch is more likely to spawn. Some examples below:
- In The Ironworks of Misery and Blood Lodge, it usually spawns on the first floor of the main buildings
- The Thompson House follows a similar pattern.
- Gas Heaven: Look inside the garage, right in front of the parked truck.
- Blood Lodge: The Hatch often appears in front of the window on Blood Lodge.
- Badham Preschool: Search next to a mattress in a dead end, in front of a staircase.
- In the Grim Pantry, there are two potential spawn locations: in the main building, next to the stars leading to the lower level; and in the smaller two-story building, it’s usually near the pallet look on the lower level.
Now here are a few things to consider on any map as this is where it might spawn:
- The Killer Shack has two potential Hatch spots: inside the shack, next to the pallet, and outside, along the windowless wall. Not all maps have a Killer Shack, but when they do, it’s a must-check.
- Main Map Building: Every map revolves around a central building, which often becomes the place where the Hatch spawns.
When searching for the Hatch, start with the main building and the Killer Shack if they are present and my locations above don’t help.
Then, move through jungle gyms and check the tops of hills, as some Hatches consistently spawn in these higher areas.
Finally, if you’re unlucky (and still alive at this point), it’s time to scour the map’s edges where it might be spawned in between random trees. This is the most difficult situation though and highly unlikely.
Listen for the wind
In Dead by Daylight, sound plays a crucial role – and that also applies when it comes to locating the Hatch.
When open, it emits a distinctive wind tunnel sound, audible from a considerable distance. Let yourself guided by the sound to find its location.
Using headphones can significantly improve your ability to locate the Hatch. Headphones provide clear directional sound, making it easier to pinpoint the Hatch’s spawn location.

Pro Tip: Play the Killer!
This might sound strange, but it’s a bit easier to learn about the potential spawn locations of the Hatches by playing the killer.
That is because you have more freedom of movement and you are less stressed since you don’t have to constantly hide and worry. You’re also faster, which allows you to search the map faster.
So use your time as a Killer to actively search for the Hatch, even when it’s closed. Find the patters – like the ones I’ve mentioned above and you will be able to easily find the hatch next time you play as a Survivor.

Final words
It’s probably not often that you need to find the Hatch when playing Dead By Daylight, but it’s good to know where to find it if you’re in this specific situation.
If you have other strategies for locating the hatch quickly as a Survivor – or if you’ve discovered some repeating spawn locations on any map not mentioned above, don’t hesitate to leave a comment below and tell us everything about it.
