Dark and Darker: Tips & Tricks for Beginners and Advanced Players

If you want to get better at Dark And Darker, my set of tips and tricks will come in handy, no matter if you are a beginner or you’ve been exploring the fantasy worlds of the game for a while now.

As a truly hardcode fantasy game with tons of features, Dark and Darker can prove to be a bit too difficult at times, but I am sure that my advice below will help. Let’s start!

1. Hit those Skeleton mobs early on

You can hit the annoying skeleton mobs while they’re waking up. No need to wait for them to get up – start hitting them from a distance with your ranged characters, or rush into them if you’re a melee fighter and start causing damage before they fully activate.

This goes for all skeleton types, including the Elite ones – just go for headshots and destroy them faster!

And if you find this to be too difficult, remember that you can always travel back in time a bit and give one of the best text based MMOs still out there a try.

2. Make more light!

dark and darker torch

In a game titled “Dark and Darker,” I think it’s pretty obvious that it’s pretty dark around you.

So always have a torch activated an pay close attention to everything around you. Don’t only use sight to be prepared for danger, but also pay attention to audio cues.

And when a fight does start, if it’s not an easy one, simply throw the torch on the ground during the fight, and deal with whatever you have to deal with. Torches that you throw can then be picked up and re-used.

3. Don’t waste your spells!

Some spells or abilities have a limited amount of uses during the game. So don’t waste those in the lobby, as that’s still counted.

This goes for all wizard spells, clerics and other abilities with a limited number of uses. Don’t waste them and instead only use them when you really must.

4. Buy coin purses

Inventory space comes at a premium, but money are important. A nice trick to make it easier to hoard money in Dark and Darker is to buy a coin purse (or more) from the treasurer.

Each coin purse can hold up to 50 coins and will become extremely useful, especially as you advance through the game and you need every inventory slot.

5. Visit the merchants in between dungeon runs

dark and darker inventory slots

Make it a habit to visit merchants in between dungeon runs to make sure that you take advantage of any items that could potentially help you gain an advantage.

It’s also good to replenish any consumables that you might have used (and which are difficult to find in the dungeons) and check for any new armor or weapons at the merchants.

6. Master the art of aiming your attacks

This varies a little bit from class to class, but you should always focus on improving the hit rates (and hit zones) of your attacks.

You should always keep an eye on the reticle on the screen that shows you how your weapon/attack is going to move. This makes it easier to adjust as the animation is flowing and hit the intended body part.

I think that it goes without saying that you should try to make it a habit to go for headshots, as these deal the most damage.

7. Take advantage of everything around you

This tip is most useful to ranged characters, who can use the environment to get some protection, while sniping down enemies.

For this, you can shoot through the small windows in the doors, for example. This can prove really useful.

There will always be boxes and other things that you can take advantage of: just get behind them for extra cover and work your magic (literally or not) from there.

Speaking of magic, keep in mind that certain spells are better in certain areas. Experiment and find what are the best moments to use your spells and abilities to cause the most damage.

8. Be aware of your surroundings when looting!

While keeping your ears open is always essential when performing a task such as looting, you can still look around a bit in order to reduce the chances of being caught off-guard.

So make it a habit to look around you when looting, but have in mind that you are limited to a 90 degree angle to each side. It’s still enough and definitely much better than nothing!

9. Become the master of dodging

Dodging is the best way to avoid damage (duh!) However, it is easier to say “you have to dodge” than to actually do it.

You will need to practice a bit and pay attention to the things I’m recommending below to become a dodging master.

The easiest attacks to dodge are those coming from melee mobs. One of the easiest ways to do it (especially if you’re also a melee character) is to get as close as possible to your opponent, then quickly backing away when they prepare to hit.

Do this repeatedly – get close, hit (maybe even 2-3 times), then retreat – and fights will be much easier.

If things get too complicated, remember that you can always sheathe your weapon. This will make it impossible for you to attack, but it will also grant you extra speed that you can use to escape a tough enemy.

Finally, you can use the shields to your advantage. This makes it a bit easier to play as you have the extra protection from the shield.

Simply study the attack animations of the different mobs you encounter, and you will know how to easily dodge their attacks or parry with the shield.

Make sure to put the tip #2 to good use though and throw that torch on the ground before starting a fight, so that you can use both a weapon and a shield.

10. Move items instantly

This is a quick tip that can save you a lot of time though. To move items instantly, Shift + Right Click items. This will create a stash of all similar items.

11. Save extra inventory space

Adding to the tip above and that regarding the coin purse, remember that you can place tools such as the pickaxe in your tool belt. Always do this, as you will basically gain one extra inventory slot from doing it.

12. Always keep an eye on the minimap

The minimap is your best friend, as it offers valuable information at all times. So make it a habit to always look at it to know what’s happening around you.

Remember, just like in most games out there, it’s the white circle that marks the safe zone, while the red one is the danger.

Always move around in such a way that you can quickly get (or you already are) inside the white area on the map.
