The Mortar and Pestle is the latest Cauldron upgrade item introduced in the Mistlands update.
It allows players to upgrade their Cauldron to level 5, which gives access to some of the best foods in the game.
If you want to utilize the new magic features, or simply want to maximize your stamina and HP gains from each meal, upgrading your Cauldron to level 5 will be an essential part of this process.
In this guide, I will explain how to get the Mortar and Pestle in Valheim Mistlands and showcase how to gather all the required materials.
How to Craft Mortar and Pestle in Valheim Mistlands

The Mortar and Pestle is the final Cauldron upgrade, after the Spice Rack, the Butcher’s Table, and the Pots and Pans.
To craft a Mortar and Pestle, players will need the following materials.
- 4x Core Wood
- 6x Fine Wood
- 8x Black Marble
Let’s examine how to get these materials in turn.
How to Get Core and Fine Wood in Valheim

Core wood is fairly common and can be found in the early game biome Black Forest. Players will need to cut any pine trees there.
All you need to cut down pine trees is a humble stone axe, so this should be the easiest material to gather.
As for fine wood, players can get it by cutting down birch or oak trees. These can be found occasionally in the Meadows biome, but are way more common in the Plains biome.
To cut down birch and oak trees, players will need at least a bronze axe.
How to Get Black Marble in Valheim

Black Marble is an end-game ore found only in the Mistlands biome. Players will need to come equipped with a black metal pickaxe to farm it, as well as a wisplight to see through the mist.
The best way of getting black marble in Valheim is by mining the petrified bones found all around the Mistlands biome.
Petrified bones can be spotted while exploring the Mistlands and are fairly common. Keep in mind that, similar to silver veins in the Mountain, petrified bones can go pretty deep underground, so be prepared to dig around to get everything.
There are also other ways to get black marble, albeit less efficiently. Players can either destroy Dvergr towers, which takes a very long time, or kill Dvergr Shamans and Rogues, which drop small amounts of black marble.
