Octopath Traveler 2: Eastern Sai Sands Gate Guide

On the west side of the Eastern Sai Lands in Hinoeuma, players will find a gate saying “Come alone if you want to pass”.

This is the entrance to the Decaying Temple Castle Dungeon and players can enter there if they only have one character in their party (instead of the usual four).

In this guide, I will explain how to enter the Easter Sai Sands Gate and showcase what you can find within it.

How to Unlock the Eastern Sai Sands Gate in Octopath Traveler 2

The main requirement for unlocking the gate in the Eastern Sai Sands area is to have one character in your party. This can be done by visiting any tavern and removing all party members except one.

Ideally, you want to keep a main DPS character that is also the highest level of all. This is because the dungeon will involve combat. Also, you can’t have any followers with you before entering so make sure to part ways with them.

Also, before entering the dungeon, make sure to travel to Sai village in Hinoeuma and pick up a quest from an NPC on the top left side of the area. The quest is called “Sword Hunter” and it requires finding the Keepsake Sword.

To get the Keepsake Sword, you’ll need to visit the Decaying Temple dungeon and beat the final boss.

The dungeon per se is not tricky to navigate. To find the final boss, simply head straight from the save point.

However, the boss is one of the hardest fights in the game if you’re not properly prepared. The dungeon is Danger Zone 40, so your character must be level 40 or above.

How to Beat Decaying Temple Boss

First, make sure to bring your strongest DPS character. Some great options include Ochette and Hikari, as they are the two best DPS characters in the game. Then, equip them with the Apothecary secondary job, so that they have access to the following skills:

  • Weak to Poison – Makes a foe temporarily weak to poison.
  • Poison Axe – Hits a foe with an axe and then applies poison.
  • Replenish Health – For three turns, replenish an ally’s HP whenever they act.

As for support skills, I recommend the following ones:

  • Inspiriting Break – Restores SP when breaking a foe.
  • The Show Goes On – Extends the duration of augmenting effects by one turn (Replenish Health lasts one more turn).
  • Bolstering Break – Raises physical attack when breaking an enemy.
  • Hale and Hearty – Increases max HP by 500.

While the most essential skill normally is Hang Tough, we won’t need it here as we’re planning to not get hit when the boss charges its final attack.

Now we’re ready for combat. The boss is weak to Sword, Dagger, Axe, Staff, Ice, and Lightning.

The boss has three phases in total:

  • Phase 1 – Unseathing Stance – For this phase, the boss will have the above weaknesses and deal normal damage. This lasts until it reaches 50% HP.
  • Phase 2 – Flawless Stance – The boss only has one weak point but no weaknesses. If you don’t break or defeat him in time, he’ll do an extremely strong attack that one-shots you (which is why many people recommend using Hang Tough). However, for this phase, you should use the two Apothecary Skills: Weak to Poison and Poison Axe. These will break the boss and put him back in the Unseathing Stance.
  • Phase 3 – Unbreakable Stance – The boss gains 15 shield points but is weak to everything. As per the previous phase, you have four turns to break the boss’ shield before he deals a massive attack. However, now, it is impossible to break his shield 15 times in four turns. Thus, your best bet is to try and kill him. Use your strongest skills and items and you’ll be able to defeat him within four turns.

With the boss defeated, you’ll get the Keepsake Sword to complete the quest.

Wrapping up

To summarize this Octopath Traveler 2 guide, players can unlock the gate in Eastern Sai Sands by going there with only one party member.

Then, they can access the dungeon and defeat one of the most challenging boss fights in the game.
