Halls of Torment is currently in Early Access, in order to give players a taste of what to expect in the full game.
In today’s guide, I will go over how to unlock all the characters in Halls of Torment.
Currently, there are seven unlockable characters and two unlockable areas in the game.
The developers have stated that they want to stay in Early Access for around 6 months with the hope that on full release they will implement even more characters, areas, and many more things.
So here is a quick overview of what you can expect to unlock while playing through the game.
- The Swordsman
- The Archer
- The Cleric
- The Exterminator
- The Warlock
- The Shield Maiden
- The Sorceress
- Ember Grounds
- Forgotten Viaduct

Halls of Torment: Unlocking the Swordsman
The Swordsman is unlocked once you start the game. It is the first option you will be given to try out, better to understand the mechanics and the feel of the game.
The Swordsman is the standard all-around melee fighter hero and his best build focuses on high damage, long-range, AoE attacks
Halls of Torment: Unlocking the Archer
The Archer is unlocked by surviving until there are only 26 minutes left on the timer. This means that to unlock him you have to stay alive for 4 minutes.
The Archer character is a long-distance fighter who can hit opponents at long range with his attack. Take advantage of this and always try to shoot into as large a mass of enemies as possible.
Halls of Torment: Unlocking the Cleric
The Cleric is unlocked by defeating the Lich in Chapter I: Haunted Caverns. This is a Quest for Chapter I.
“Quests” are summarized by classic quests, such as killing bosses, but also achievements, such as dealing a set amount of damage.
The Cleric is one of the strongest characters in Halls of Torment as he combines solid AoE and single-target damage with great survivability.
Halls of Torment: Unlocking the Exterminator
The Exterminator is unlocked by killing 1000 enemies in one run during Chapter II: Ember Grounds.
The Exterminator character is a ranged fighter that starts with a flamethrower. He can hit multiple targets at once, triggering the Burn effect.
Halls of Torment: Unlocking the Warlock
The Warlock is unlocked by defeating the Wyrm Queen in Chapter II: Ember Grounds.
The character Warlock is a summoner. The Warlock’s primary weapon is a summoned unit that flies straight at enemies, damaging them.
Halls of Torment: Unlocking the Shield Maiden
The Shield Maiden is unlocked by defeating the Wraith Horseman in Chapter III: Forgotten Viaduct.
The Shieldmaiden character scales with Block Strength and has no actual main attack.
Halls of Torment: Unlocking the Sorcerer
The Sorcerer is unlocked by killing 1000 enemies in one run during Chapter III: Forgotten Viaduct.
The character Sorceress inflicts damage with spells. It has hardly any defensive stats, but a high damage potential.
Halls of Torment: Unlocking the Ember Grounds
The Ember Grounds is named after Chapter II: Ember Grounds with its own set of quests.
In order to unlock the Ember Grounds, you must complete the Quest: The Imp Chieftain. It can be done with any character.
Halls of Torment: Unlocking the Forgotten Viaduct
The Forgotten Viaduct is named after Chapter III: Forgotten Viaduct with its own set of quests.
In order to unlock the Forgotten Viaduct, you will have to complete the Quest: Wraith Warlord. It can be done with any character.
Final Thoughts
Even as an early-access game, you have a lot of things to unlock, a lot of achievements to complete, and a lot of items to unlock.
The game has a lot to offer even as an early access, so once it releases fully it will be a hidden gem.
