The Cryo Hypostasis boss is a world boss in Genshin Impact necessary for ascending some of the game’s best Cryo characters.
In addition, this boss appears occasionally on Spiral Abyss. Mastering its mechanics will be key to getting 9 stars whenever it comes back to Abyss.
In this boss guide, I’ll show you Cryo Hypostasis’ location in the open world and how to unlock it, provide some tips and tricks for defeating it, and go through all of its potential drops.
Cryo Hypostasis Location & How to Unlock

Cryo Hypostasis is located at the top left side of Dragonspine, near Wyrmrest Valley. There’s a waypoint nearby, so after unlocking it’s easy to walk there.
As for unlocking it, players will need to thaw the shards of ice around Dragonspine. This is done by completing the ‘In the Mountains‘ quest line.
How to Defeat Cryo Hypostasis
As for mechanics, the boss behaves similarly to the other Hypostasis world bosses. It’s invulnerable during the majority of the fight where players should focus on dodging.
After certain mechanics, it exposes its core for a few seconds, allowing players to deal as much damage as possible in that short amount of time.
The best tip is to focus on dodging and keep your cooldowns for whenever its core gets exposed.
When it’s close to dying, Cryo Hypostasis will teleport to the middle and become invulnerable. Players will have to break its Cryo bar in time to finish the fight.
While you can use Pyro attacks to break it, there is a more effective way. Hit the frostfruits thrown by the boss with a charge attack, while looking towards it. This will launch them towards the boss and take down a big portion of its bar.
Cryo Hypostasis Basic Attacks
Cryo Hypostasis rotates through various basic attacks. As long as you dodge these, you’ll have an opening at the boss’ core right after.
Clap Attack
The boss summons two hands and brings them together to perform a clap attack. To avoid this, dodge away from the hands at the right time.
Cryo Barrage Attack
The Boss stands still and starts throwing multiple projectiles toward the player. The strategy here is to run away from the boss and keep moving until it stops shooting projectiles.
Ice Spikes
The boss marks the ground and then summons spikes that damage and stun the player. Keep an eye on the ground to avoid the places where spikes will spawn.
Ice Wheel
Cryo Hypostasis transforms into a wheel and charges toward the player. This can be repeated multiple times before the boss’ core gets exposed, so make sure to keep dodging.
Dodging here works similarly to Boreas/Andrius (the weekly wolf boss) when it transforms to its second phase: it’s all about timing your dodges properly.
Ice Shower
The boss sends three circular attacks of spikes around it. One close-range, the second mid-range, and the last far. Either run far away or dodge toward the boss in between these attacks to avoid getting hit.
How to Manage the Sheer Cold Mechanic
Since the Cryo Hypostasis fight takes place in Dragonspine, players will also have to deal with the Sheer Cold mechanic. In short, players will freeze to death slowly unless they get near a heat source.
Fortunately, there are many heat sources around the boss. Try to use them occasionally and keep your cold meter down, to ensure you won’t freeze before defeating the boss.
Best Characters for Cryo Hypostasis
While any non-Cryo characters can defeat the Cryo Hypostasis, some manage to stand out. Especially Pyro and Electro characters, since the boss is weak to those elements. Here are some of the best characters to fight Cryo Hypostasis:
- Hu Tao
- Diluc
- Yoimiya
- Yanfei
- Xiangling
- Fischl
- Keqing
- Zhong Li
- Diona
In short, Pyro and Electro DPS characters are the best choices for this fight. Try and have Pyro Elemental Resonance in your team (2+ Pyro party members), while also having a shielder support.
Cryo Hypostasis Achievements
Achievements are a great way to earn some extra primogems, and Cryo Hypostasis includes two of them. Specifically, each of those rewards 5 primogems.
- A Single Nights Worth – Defeat a Cryo Hypostasis in its weakened state
- Knee-Deep Snow – Defeat a Cryo Hypostasis that has revived three times
For the first achievement, all you need to do is complete the fight normally and defeat the boss while its core is exposed.
For the second achievement, during the final phase players have to break its cold endurance bar by using charged attacks on the frostfruits. Failing to break its bar in time means the boss will revive. Fail three times on purpose and then defeat Cryo Hypostasis for this achievement.
Cryo Hypostasis Drops
When defeated, Cryo Hypostasis drops the following materials:
- Adventure & Companion EXP
- Mora
- Shivada Jade Drops
- Crystalline Blooms
- Berserker, The Exile, Gladiator’s Finale, Wanderer’s Troupe artifacts.
All Cryo characters use Shivada Jade Drops for ascension. On the other hand, only Eula uses Crystalline Blooms. Consider checking out our in-depth guide for Eula’s best build in Genshin Impact for more information.
Conclusion
And that’s how to defeat Cryo Hypostasis in Genshin Impact. In short, this is a fairly straightforward fight.
Focus on dodging while the boss is invulnerable and keep your cooldowns for when its core is exposed. Cryo Hypostasis is necessary if you’re planning to level up and ascend Eula.
