The gameplay mechanics are deceptively simple: wreck the mountain for treasure, hit more bearded laborers, send out war machines, and stack buffs until each attempt scales higher than the last. But, as you prbably saw already, there’s a lot more than just the basics.
Logistics Are Important
Damage means nothing without logistics. Your crew breaks the mountain, the rocks drop gold, your Runners haul that treasure back to base, the terrain retaliates, and you spend your hard-earned profits on better gear for the next push.
But of the entire mechanism, don’t ignore those Runners! All the gold in the world is useless if it sits out in the danger zone.
If your damage output outpaces your hauling capacity, progress stalls out entirely. Therefore, ensure that your haulers are the main engine of the operation, and build their damage, artifact synergies, and prestige paths specifically to support the delivery pipeline.

The Workforce: Dwarves, Machines, And Explosives

The game gives you a massive roster of units to tear apart the mountain.
You have your standard Dynamite Throwers for explosive damage, heavy-hitting Ballistas, and support-focused Flamers. And everything is upgradeable, of course!
Eventually, you move up to Laser Cannons, heavy Bulldozers, and Gyrocopters featuring highly questionable safety standards – but dwarves don’t mind.
On the utility side, Spelunkers handle exploration duties, Runesmiths provide magic synergies, and Brewmasters offer buffs to keep the team moving.
The Demodwarf Early Meta
While the tech tree is huge, you will hit a massive grind wall if you don’t do the right things with it.
During the early runs, I recommend ignoring lasers completely. They are late-game stuff that you don’t get much out of in the first few runs. Instead, grab your Runners and immediately dump absolutely all your funds into Demodwarfs.
These units are incredibly cheap and deal absurd amounts of damage for their cost point.
You can ride this explosive wave until you bank around 15 to 20 Prestige Points, depending on your luck with random drops, then reset and do it again. It turns a slow crawl into a highly efficient demolition derby.

Artifacts And Synergies

You will eventually trip over more than 120 ancient artifacts, and these are what actually shape your builds. They dictate whether your current run should lean into machine buffs, dwarf scaling, or active rituals.
The Carry-Over Economy
Your long-term speed heavily relies on acquiring the Relic of Kings or Relic of Gods perk, which lets you hold onto two artifacts across your resets. This is extremely important, because the bonuses and boosts you get from them will give you massive boosts in new runs.
Depending on your drops, you can have different strategies, but I like to focus on carrying over any of the following: Gemstone Idol, Royal Tax Refund or the Giant Mithril Nugget.
This helps you secure a massive early gold injection, letting you skip the initial recruitment slog and instantly fund your Demodwarf army.
Are Artifacts Retroactive?
You don’t have to find this the hard way as I did. Unless an artifact explicitly states it works retroactively – like the Book of Grudges – it doesn’t.
Consider the Forgebound Seal, which permanently increases Miner, Harpoon Ballista, and Great Duke Cannon damage every time you use the Forge Artifact ritual.
If you spammed that ritual fifty times before acquiring the Seal, those uses are completely lost to the void. The tracking begins the exact second the relic hits your inventory.
The same goes for Hermes Sandals. They grant Runners a stacking speed buff whenever they dodge boulders, but your haulers will receive absolutely zero credit for dodges made before equipping the item.

The Mountain Fights Back

The Great Mother is not just a passive pile of rocks waiting to be mined. As your destruction ramps up, the mountain pushes back through Calamities. This usually involves nasty hazards like falling boulders that squash your crew.
This hazard system is exactly why over-investing in pure damage is a trap. If you push your damage too high while ignoring your Runners and support systems, the resulting hazard ramp-up creates a death trap.
Your workers will get crushed, the gold will rot on the ground, and your run will grind to a halt. You must keep your damage and hauling capabilities growing together.
How and When to Prestige
Many of the late game features are locked behind the prestige system. To access advanced machinery and deeper tech, you have to hit prestige tiers 3 and 4.
Like in all similar games, Prestiging is best done when progress seems to have hit a wall. If you do it too quickly, you won’t get enough bonuses for your new runs, but if you delay it for too long, you’re just wasting time.
The same goes for spending rare resources like Mithril and Mountain Souls. Hoard these carefully and spend them on upgrades that persist across multiple ascensions, keeping your overall account power scaling upward.

Dwarf Eats Mountain requires you to think beyond the biggest damage number. To survive the grind, use your rituals actively during major progression pushes, read your artifact bonuses to see what kind of build the run actually wants, and never drag out a stalled attempt when a reset would yield better long-term value.
