There are so many animals you will see exploring, and in this guide, I will go over how to tame animals in the Avatar Frontiers of Pandora.
There are two animal species you can tame as of the game’s original release.
One is the Ikran, which you tame by completing the “Take Flight quest”, and the other is the Direhorse, which you learn to tame during the “The Wandering Clan” main quest.
Let’s dive into the details of how to get both.
Avatar Frontiers of Pandora: Taming the Ikran
After completing the main quest “The Eye of Eywa”, the game will prompt you to the next main quest.
You will be tasked to meet Nefika and Eetu at the Ikran Rookery to bond with your ikran. Going to the Rookery will be a straightforward road, so don’t worry about getting lost.
Though it may be tempting to go around exploring, it is in your best interest to tame your ikran and unlock aerial exploration.
Travel south from the Glade of Light to reach the Ikran Rookery. You will need to cross a small bridge to reach the entrance of the rookery. The entrance looks like a large hole made up of tree roots, and large vines.
Once you enter, interact with the campfire to pass the time until Nefika and Eetu arrive. Once enough time has passed time at the campfire, a cutscene will begin with Nefika and Eetu, who will start your trial to tame the Ikran.
After running around two times, the third you finally catch up to it, and you will be prompted to soothe it. After holding the interact button, and walking up to the Ikran it will push you back while batting its wings twice.
The third time you try, you will succeed in soothing it, and you will be given a variety of options to customize your Ikran.
You will be given ten naming options and five coloration options to choose from as a bonus.
With the completion of taming your Ikran, you will unlock the Memories of the Rider, and with the final skill tree unlocked, check out our guide on the best skills to unlock in Avatar Frontiers of Pandora.
Avatar Frontiers of Pandora: Taming Direhorses
Direhorses are the other mount you can have while exploring the world. The sky is great, and all, but at some point you will want to explore the land by foot, or in this case by Direhorse.
Players will find Direhorses living around the Western Frontier, though unlikely they are also living in the Kinglor Fores. If you end up struggling to find any a safe bet will be to look in the Upper Plains.
To unlock the ability to tame Direhorses though, you might need to wait a bit.
During the “The Wandering Clan” main quest after you will meet with the Zewsa clan, you will see a herd of Direhorses, and as you slowly walk up to one, you will be prompted to soothe it.
When you complete the small interaction, you will be shown a cute interaction of you calming the Direhorse down.
Unlike the Ikran, you will not be bonded with a single Direhorse, nor will you be able to call it over once you soothed it. You will be able to ride alongside it and explore the world with it, but that’s about it.
You will not need to go around taming an entire herd at a time, the one is just fine. You will just have to find and soothe a new Direhorse when you want to explore on land.
Final Thoughts
Mounts can be an integral part of how players explore the world, and taming animals is an interesting way to make players go about it without breaking the immersion.
