Smiley is one of the three free mercs that you can recruit in Jagged Alliance 3 alongside Flay and Larry.

To get Smiley in JA3, players will have to follow a series of steps. Here is everything you need to do:

  1. Travel to Pantagruel Slums – Talk to Maman there and ask about Mollie’s kidnapping.
  2. Investigate the mentioned locations – Specifically, the bathhouse, the upper floor of the brothel, and the roof.
  3. Do not speak to the priest in Fleatown La Bou yet (the quest will tell you to do so but you should avoid it for now).
  4. Complete Boss Blaubert’s questline and save Luigi from the Good Place.
  5. Return to Blaubert’s mansion and take Blaubert’s side against Luigi – This is also where you can get the best melee weapon in JA3.
  6. After this battle ends, head to Fleatown La Bou and speak with the priest – say that you know where he is hiding Smiley.
  7. Kill the enemies that appear and pass a high Leadership check to save the priest from Smiley.
  8. Travel to Blaubert’s mansion to find Smiley and prepare for one of the toughest battles of the game.
  9. Complete the fight while keeping Smiley alive and he will join your team.

To make the battle at Blaubert’s mansion easier, I highly recommend bringing a few extra mercs to help you out. Also, prioritize killing enemies next to Smiley to ensure he stays alive.

If done correctly, Smiley will join your team after the battle. However, this process takes a lot of effort and many players are wondering if Smiley is worth it.

Smiley Stats in JA 3 – Is he Good?

The short answer is that no, Smiley is not worth the effort. While he is free, his stats make him a fairly weak merc in Jagged Alliance 3.

Smiley has high marksmanship and strength stats, but extremely low dexterity. Due to that, he is considered weak in both melee and ranged combat.

Additionally, his ability causes him to become tired, exhausted, or unconscious, based on how many times it’s used before resting.

Keep in mind that Smiley is better than the other two free mercs, so you can use him as an all-around merc if you don’t have any other options.
