When interacting with some NPCs players have the option to either debate or duel with them. They can’t do both actions, and not every character can be challenged to a duel.
Winning in a Duel or Debate will award players with certain drops, based on the character they challenged.

How to Duel and Debate in Volcano Princess
When interacting with certain characters in Volcano Princess, you’ll be able to Duel or Debate them.
This option is available when interacting with them and selecting ‘Challenge’.
Not all characters will be available to challenge in a duel or debate and you can’t do both. You can either duel or debate with a character. Since you can’t choose between them, always select whichever is available.
Keep in mind that you can’t duel every character, and you can’t duel all the time.
While it can be troublesome to find a duel/debate partner, the drops are fairly worth it.
