Unrailed 2: Back on Track just dropped a chunky new update, and you can test it out for free on Steam, over the weekend, until September 1, 2025.

What’s new in the Summer Holiday Update

This patch adds fresh ways to play, including new modes, characters, and gameplay modifiers:

  • Sandbox Mode – Adjust everything: player count (up to 8), hazards, and session length. Whether you want chill vibes or absolute chaos, you’re in charge.
  • Classic Mode – A stripped-down mode focused on building tracks as far as you can, without upgrades or boss fights getting in the way.
  • Two new characters – Say hi to Bernd the beaver and Spike the cactus, both ready to hammer down some tracks.
  • New cartridges – Equip upgrades like the Claw Cartridge to grab tools from a distance, or the Insta-Hit Cartridge to instantly knock out NPCs.
  • Recreated classic songs – Four updated tracks from the original Unrailed soundtrack, built for maximum nostalgia.

How the game plays now

Unrailed 2 keeps the same “keep the train alive at all costs” gameplay loop, but now with more ways to tweak your runs. You’ll pick routes, customize your character, and unlock permanent upgrades between sessions. The branching paths and modifiers make each run feel different.

You can squad up in local or online co-op with up to 8 players, or fill gaps with bots if your crew can’t make it. At its core, the game is still about fast teamwork and preventing total disaster when the tracks start falling apart.

Early Access and what’s next

The game is still in Early Access on Steam, with Indoor Astronaut steadily dropping updates based on community feedback. They’ve already rolled out multiple major patches, and more features are planned before the 1.0 release.
