How to Solve the Telephone Puzzle in Layers of Fear
After entering the Painter’s Office and revealing the secret room behind the bookshelf with the ringing phone, players will need to ring three different 3-digit numbers to solve this puzzle.
The goal is to get one three-digit number, ring it on the phone, and then wait for another phone to start ringing which will reveal the location of the second three-digit number.
Let’s examine how to get each of the three-digit numbers.
How to Get the First Phone Number
The first phone number can be found by returning to the Painter’s Office and looking at the Babyface portrait. The note within the painting will reveal the first number, which is 636.
Use the phone to dial this number and follow the ringing sound of a different phone.
How to Get the Second Phone Number
From the office, you’ll notice a door where the secret passage was. Follow that long corridor and be careful not to fall at the end of it. Hug the left wall and climb the stairs to find the ringing phone.
After picking up the phone, walk towards the edge and a bookcase will fall in front of you. On that bookcase, you’ll find the next number, which is 853.
Dial this number and push the bookcase to open up the path. Stick to the wall while heading left.
How to Get the Third Phone Number
Keep following the path and light candles to reveal stairs. Push the plank to create a makeshift bridge and you’ll reach the third and final phone.
Return to the office after answering it and you’ll notice five paintings across the room, each with a number.
Match them with the numbers behind the phone and you’ll reveal the last three-digit number, which is 354.
Follow the path to the phone again, and you’ll be able to progress the story.
