Dwarf Fortress: How to Make a Tavern

Building a tavern in Dwarf Fortress is essential as it allows dwarves to socialize and calm down after a tough day. It also motivates visitors to come to your fortress.

To build a tavern, players will have to prepare an area with tables and chairs and set it as a Meeting Area and then Tavern.

In this guide, I will explain how to make a Tavern in Dwarf Fortress and showcase why it’s essential to build one as soon as you can.

Here’s everything you’ll need to do to make a tavern in Dwarf Fortress, step-by-step:

  1. Dig out an area – The tavern is a fairly big space, so aim for a 5×15 or larger space. The goal is to have enough space for the dwarves to dance. If you selected the wrong area, check out our guide on how to cancel mining orders in the game.
  2. Smoothen the area – This will allow you to set zones later.
  3. Build a door – This is done by navigating to Building (hotkey: B) and then Doors and Hatches (hotkey: P)
  4. Place chairs and tables – Navigate to the Furniture tab (hotkey: F) and place tables and chairs at the edges of the tavern. Make sure to pair each chair with one table (not multiple chairs per table) as dwarves can end up fighting for tables. Also, place them on the edges to leave room for dancing.
  5. Place a chest for mugs – From the Furniture tab (hotkey: F), also place a chest that will store mugs. As long as you have crafted mugs and goblets, they will be automatically transferred there.
  6. Set up food stockpile – At the edge of the tavern, select a small area (around 2×4) and set it as a stockpile (hotkey: P). Then, select the food stockpile and include every food there except seeds.
  7. Assign Zone – Select Assign Zone (hotkey: Z), select the tavern area and set it as a Meeting Zone. Right after selecting the zone, click on the plus button in the top left corner and choose “New inn/tavern”.

And that’s all you need to know on how to make a tavern in Dwarf Fortress. Now dwarves will start hanging at the tavern while you’ll also get visitors there.

The tavern area allows dwarves to socialize by drinking, dancing, and even engaging in bar brawls.

The tavern will also host visitors and can have instruments to provide better forms of entertainment for the dwarves.

Optionally, you can also build a sleeping area next to the tavern and rent rooms for visitors who were granted long-term residency. To get more visitors, check out our guide on how to attract migrants in Dwarf Fortress.

Lastly, dwarves will share information in the tavern in the form of rumors about locations worth visiting, hidden artifacts, or the outcome of a previous expedition where the squad went missing.

Wrapping up

To sum up this Dwarf Fortress guide, players can build a tavern by digging an area and setting it as a Tavern/Inn. Then, they can fill this area with tables, chairs, and mugs to allow dwarves to meet and relax there.

With a tavern built, you’ll need to make sure you always have enough food. Check out our guide on how to get more seeds in Dwarf Fortress to never run out of food.
