Aberrations are mutated variants of fish in Dredge that are more difficult to find than their “normal” counterparts.
The Fishmonger describes them as ‘corrupted’, the in-game text as ‘grotesque’, and is the first sign in the game that something is wrong.
In this guide, I will walk you through all the aberrations in the game, and even provide some tips for catching Aberrations, in Dredge.

Dredge: Knowledge About Aberrations

Aberrated Fish can be found in patches of disturbed water only if the player makes no mistakes while reeling in the fish.
Furthermore, Aberrated fish are found in greater frequency in patches of disturbed water with embers and a blue distortion above them still noting that the player makes no mistakes while catching the fish.
Not all fish have an aberration version. All crabs, and anything caught in a pot, don’t have an Aberration and neither do the exotic fish.
Catching most aberrations involves the same strategy, and I will go more in-depth about it, as we progress further in this guide.
Dredge: Strategies to Catch Aberrations Easier
The most important factor when you are hunting Aberrations is to know where their spawn locations are. After that, it’s part of the waiting game for them to appear, in that spawn location.
Occasionally a shimmer effect will appear above a school of fish, this means a guaranteed aberration will spawn in that school.
Luckily for players, there are ways to speed up this process. Also, the spell Atrophy almost always grants an aberration and is much faster than fishing normally.
- Review the Encyclopedia for location and water depth/type of base fish.
- Wait for the shimmer effect or use the Atrophy spell
- Collect aberration
Unfortunately, even if players follow these steps, they may be unable to catch Aberrations.
Well, another method you can try, is to use the “mixed bait” item. You unlock this item by completing The Bitter End pursuit.
Once you use this item random fish will come to the boat’s location. This is very useful for all the open ocean aberrations where finding a specific spawn location can be tedious.
- Locate Aberrations location
- Use mixed bait
- Use Atrophy spell
- Collect aberrations
Be sure to keep this in mind when using the mixed bait item. It will only give fish that you can catch so make sure you have the right gear to catch the fish you want.
That is both something to keep in mind, but also to use to your advantage. If you want a specific fish, just unequip all fishing gear that does not apply to the certain fish you are looking for.
For example, if you want the Skeletal Moonfish Aberration, equip only the hydraulic rod, and go to the open ocean. From there use the mixed bait item, and the Atrophy spell until you have found it.
Note: Quitting the game, and then reloading the save file from the menu will bring back all fish pools. This effect does not apply to fish pools created by the mixed bait item.
