Mastering the combat system is an important part of Forsppoken, and spamming offensive magic isn’t always the best option.
Instead, when facing certain opponents or trying to complete specific challenges, players will want to utilize the block and counter mechanics.
To block attacks players need to use the Shield Shot spell, while to counter attacks they will need to find the right timing and press the triangle button when the enemy is charging an attack.
Before trying to master this mechanic, consider checking out our guide on how to switch magic in the game. It’s an important first step before learning to block and counter.
In this guide, I will explain how to block and counter attacks in Forspoken, and showcase how to unlock the required spells.
How to Block Attacks in Forspoken
To block attacks in Forspoken, players will need to unlock the Shield Shot spell. This is an offensive purple magic spell.
When players hold this spell, Frey summons a shield that blocks most incoming damage. Combined with the automatic damage that is blocked by Cuff, this makes Frey almost immune to attacks.
Then, release the button to deal damage to nearby enemies and knock them down.
To unlock the Shield Shot spell, players will need to unlock and progress the purple magic tree (Frey’s Magic).
How to Counter Attacks in Forspoken
Countering attacks in Forspoken is far more complicated than blocking since it requires extremely precise timing.
Similar to games like Elden Ring, players have a very short time to counter an enemy’s attack when they are charging it. On higher difficulty levels, this timing becomes even shorter.
To counter an attack in Forspoken, players will need to press the triangle button (on a PlayStation controller) at the right time as the enemy is charging their attack.
Unfortunately, spamming the triangle button during combat and hoping to counter an attack will almost always fail. In this case, practice makes perfect and players will need to keep trying to counter attacks until they get the timing right.
The best part is that successfully countering an attack will knock the enemy back and allow you to restore some HP at the same time. Mastering this mechanic will ensure you can beat the game even at the hardest difficulty.
Wrapping up
To summarize, players can block attacks in Forspoken by holding the Shield Shot spell from the purple magic tree and counter attacks by finding the right timing to press the triangle button when enemies are charging an attack.
