Maximizing your troop count and power in Whiteout Survival is essential if you want to do better in the game – from attacking, to doing well in events and defending against incoming enemies.
In today’s guide, I will tell you everything you should know about troops in the game, both as a F2P player, but also if you like to spend some real-life money. Let’s begin!
Understanding Troop Types and Their Roles
First things first! You have to fully understand how each of the three primary troop types work in Whiteout Survival, as each has it’s own set of strengths and weaknesses.
- Infantry: Your tanks, designed to absorb damage and protect other units. Best for holding the line and countering Lancers.
- Lancers: Well-rounded mid-range fighters. They counter Marksmen and work well in versatile formations.
- Marksmen: High-damage, long-range units that excel against Infantry but require protection due to their low health.
Upgrading Troops and Facilities
Your troops can get better as you progress in the game – up to Tier 10, currently. This is a time-consuming process, but it has to be done. Here are a few things to know about upgrading troops and facilities you should focus on to build a perfect army.
Focus on Furnace Levels
The Furnace is one of the most important buildings in the game and it’s also key for unlocking higher-tier troops. Aim for these milestones as fast as possible:
- Level 25: Unlocks Tier 9 troops.
- Level 30: Unlocks Tier 10 troops and additional research options.
Higher Furnace levels also boost rally capacity, letting you deploy more troops in attacks.
This will help greatly in various in-game situations, including events like the Bear Hunt Event.
Fire Crystal Troops
At Furnace Level 30, you gain access to Fire Crystal upgrades, significantly boosting troop stats.
These levels can go up to FC10, with each level making your army more formidable. Prioritize building upgrades and collecting Fire Crystals to produce these units automatically.
These are premium items that are difficult to get, so I recommend checking out my guide to Fire Crystals too.
Focus on Battle Research
In the Research Center, prioritize Battle Research over Economy or Growth, because this is the most useful feature when you’re starting. I say this because early-game fights are constant and any advantage you can get will help a ton.
After all, there’s no point in hoarding all the resources in the world if you can’t protect them – so invest in strengthening your troops by focusing on Battle Research upgrades.

Boosting Troop Strength
There are other ways to directly influence the strength of your troops – you should know about them all, so read on!
Hero Skills and Gear
Heroes are extremely important for troop performance. Upgrade their expedition skills and equip better gear to:
- Increase troop power.
- Improve chances in both defense and attack.
Assign heroes strategically. Combat-focused heroes provide the biggest buffs to troops in battle. Match them with the troop type they enhance (Infantry, Lancer, or Marksman) for maximum effect.
Chief Gear and Charms
At Level 22, you unlock Chief Gear, and at Level 25, Chief Charms. These upgrades can boost troop attack and lethality by up to 85%, offering a massive power spike. Invest in these upgrades to make your army nearly unstoppable.
Should You Train New Troops or Promote Old Ones?
The golden rule? Promote your old troops first. Upgrading existing troops takes less time that training new ones and you get stronger formations overall.
However, depending on where you are in the game, it might still be wiser to train new ones instead. I have a full guide dedicated to this, so read it here to fully understand what to do depending on your situation.
Always Keep Training
No matter if you’re training or promoting, you should always work on improving your army. Log in constantly to restart training or upgrade cycles. You can even turn notifications on to know when your new batch is ready. The more often you train troops, the better you will do in the long run.
How to Protect Your Troops in PvP
PvP is where you run the risk of losing some of your troops. This is painful and can set you back a ton, but I have some tips and tricks to share to help you avoid that. Here’s what you should always have in mind:
Increase Healing Speed and Capacity. Upgrade your infirmary to handle more injured troops and speed up recovery. This is probably the most important thing to have in mind – any injured troops that can’t get in the infirmary will be lost (with an exception, listed below)
Unlock the Enlistment Office. At Furnace Level 11, this building helps recover troops that exceed your infirmary capacity.
Avoid Strong Players. If a powerful player teleports near you, shield up or relocate immediately.
Don’t Attack Players at Your Level. Even if your power seems similar, troop count and other factors can tip the balance. It doesn’t sound nice, but you should always attack weaker players which are easy targets – ideally inactive ones to avoid the wrath of their entire alliance.
Avoid Weak Rallies. Don’t join rallies led by weaker players as you have lower chances to win.
