In the first part of the Painter’s story in Layers of Fear, players will come across a room with four painting frames where the main door will be locked.
To solve this puzzle, you’ll need to look through the painting frames, which will cause the remaining room to change. You’ll need to look through a specific frame to spawn a key, and then through a different one to spawn a door.
In this guide, I will showcase how to solve the painting frames puzzle in Layers of Fear to help you progress the main story.

How to Solve the Empty Frames Puzzle in Layers of Fear
The Empty Frames puzzle in Layers of Fear is part of the first chapter of the painter’s story.
This puzzle is split into two parts: first, you’ll need to find the key and then the hidden door. You can do these in any order.
Let’s examine how to solve it.
How to Reveal the Key
While looking towards the windows, find the left-most frame. Position yourself so that you’re looking towards the right window and you’ll make another frame appear just next to the right window. Stand still for a few seconds and then the new frame will stay in place.
Then, go to the new frame and look through it. Instead of the statue there, you’ll see a key that you can pick up.
How to Reveal the Door
To reveal the door, while looking towards the windows, go to the right-most frame. Look front and left to make another frame appear and stand still for a few seconds to lock it in place.
Then, move to the new frame and look straight through it to reveal the door. Again, stand still for a few seconds to make the door stay in place.
Use the key to unlock this door and you’ve successfully solved this puzzle.
Wrapping up
To sum up, players can solve the painting frames puzzle in Layers of Fear by looking toward the statue from the empty frame of a painting and then looking toward the door from another frame.
It’s all a matter of positioning, as is everything in this game.
