The 1.20 Trails & Tales upgrade introduced a variety of new items, mechanics, and mobs.
This includes the new mob known as the Sniffer, which can be obtained by finding its eggs in suspicious blocks in Ocean Monuments. To breed Sniffers, players will need to use Torchflower Seeds, which can be found by Sniffers while digging.
In this guide, I will showcase where to find Sniffers based on their spawn locations and how to breed them in Minecraft.

How to Get the Sniffer in Minecraft – Spawn Location

The only way to get a Sniffer in Minecraft is through the new Archaeology mechanic. Players will need to craft a Brush (place vertically Feather + Copper Ingot + Stick), and search for suspicious blocks of sand or gravel (slightly darker with more texture details compared to the original blocks).
Then, use the brush on these blocks to dig up various artifacts.
To find a Sniffer Egg in Minecraft, players will need to dig suspicious sand blocks around Warm Ocean Ruins.
Keep in mind that this is far from easy. Specifically, each suspicious sand block in a warm ocean monument only has a 6.7% of spawning a Sniffer Egg. This means that you’ll need to get lucky or brush a lot of sand.
Cold Ocean Ruins are located in the deeper parts of the sea and you’ll need to brush gravel while Warm Ocean Ruins are usually in shallow waters and you’ll need to brush sand.
What do Sniffers do?
Sniffers aim around in Minecraft and occasionally stick their noses on the ground. At times, they will dig up a seed, which is one of the new seed additions in this update: Torchflower Seed or Pitcher Pod.
Sniffers can dig up seeds from any of the following blocks:
- Dirt
- Grass
- Podzol
- Coarse Dirt
- Rooted Dirt
- Moss Block
- Mud
- Muddy Mangrove Roots
Then, you can use their newly found seeds to grow them into decorative plants. However, the seeds can also be used for breeding certain animals.
How to Breed Sniffers in Minecraft
To hatch a Sniffer egg in Minecraft, place it anywhere and leave it there, similar to a turtle egg. After a few in-game days, a Sniffer will spawn.
After a baby Sniffer hatches, which is known as a Sniffler, it will take two in-game days to grow into an adult. Then, if players have two adults, they can choose to breed them.
To breed Sniffers in Minecraft, players will need to feed both of them a Torchflower Seed (not a flower). Then, they will provide you with an egg, which will eventually hatch into a new Sniffler.
Wrapping up
To sum up this Minecraft Sniffer guide, the Sniffer is a new mob introduced in the Trails & Tales update. Players can find Sniffers through Archaeology in Warm Ocean Ruins.
Then, they can hatch Sniffer eggs by placing them anywhere and wait until they grow into adult Sniffers which can be bred with Torchflower Seeds. To get Torchflower Seeds, simply let an adult Sniffer roam around for a while and it will dig up the seeds you need.
