In every strategy city builder game, being prepared is a key part of success and Against the Storm is no exception.
When starting out, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the various mechanics in the game and miss various important details.
In this guide, I will go through some of the best tips and tricks in Against the Storm to help you play better when starting out.
Choose a Plan Before Starting Out

When starting out, try to have a strategy on how you’re going to approach each playthrough. Decide if you’re going to focus on expansion, research, development, or anything else. Try and decide which buildings, orders, and upgrades you’ll prioritize.
While these will change throughout the game based on storms and other factors, it’s helpful to have a general plan beforehand.
Don’t Always Choose Orders and Blueprints Right Away
While you can choose orders and blueprints the second you unlock them, it’s not necessary to do so.
Instead, it’s better to save them if unsure for later on. Perhaps a new random event will require a different order or blueprint and having it saved will make your life easier.
Take Advantage of Seasons
There are many seasonal bonuses available in Against the Storm that rotate after certain occurrences. For instance, players can have increased meat and sparkdew production during Drizzle.
To understand the importance, during Drizzle, players can collect up to 4 times more meat from a single node; it’s not just about speed, but also about the total amount produced.
Make sure to always keep an eye on seasonal modifiers and try to take advantage of them by assigning workers to perform tasks with buffs.
Keep an Eye on Hostility
During storms, it’s key to keep an eye on the hostility meter to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible.
If you’re having issues with the hostility meter, consider temporarily removing a woodcutter. This will reduce the meter by a solid amount and help you make it through the storm.
Limit Resource Production Early On
Don’t turn all your wood into planks as soon as you get it. During the early game, plank production will be fairly inefficient, so I highly recommend only crafting as many as you need.
Later on, with new research unlocked, you will be able to create more planks with the same amount of wood. Thus, crafting more than you need early on simply means you’re wasting your resources.
Don’t Cut Into Small Glades if not Necessary
Unless you really need the resources, cutting into small glades isn’t worth it, especially in the mid-game, since it raises hostility significantly. You end up gaining a lot of hostility for only a few resources.
Instead, dangerous glades are more worth it considering resources gained versus hostility gained.
Also, in higher difficulties, it is essential to not gain any unnecessary hostility.
Conclusion
To sum up, these are some of the best tips and tricks to help you play better in Against the Storm.
Plan you run beforehand, don’t make rushed decisions, and take advantage everything the game gives you.
