Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era – Best Tier 6 Units in the Game

Tier 6 units in Olden Era are strong, scary, and incredibly useful in battle. But which faction has the best Tier 6 unit? This is what I’m going to tell you in today’s article.

Fans of the old Heroes of Might and Magic games (especially HoMM 3) probably hold the Dread Knight close to their heart already, but how does it stack against the new stack of Tier 6 units? Let’s check it out below.

Olden Era Tier 6 Best Units

Dread Knight in HoMM Olden Era
Where does the fan favorite Dread Knight stand?

Before ranking them, I want to say that they’re all definitely good troops and, used right, they can truly change the course of the battle.

And this is the key factor to consider when ranking any type of Tier 6 unit: how YOU play the game.

Having a solid strategy, using the right spells, activating their skills at the right time and even hitting at the perfect moment can turn an already solid unit into a battle-winning machine.

But, generally speaking, here is the ranking of the best tier 6 units in HoMM Olden Era, in the game’s current state (note I will go more in-depth below, so keep reading!)

  1. Hydra
  2. Dread Knight
  3. Arbitrator (aka “The Fat Guy”)
  4. Qilin
  5. Waurms
  6. Inquisitor

Explanations for these rankings

Now, as you can see, I listed the “basic” form of each of the unit types, before taking their potential upgrades into account and considering that you can recruit the maximum amount of troops in each castle.

The Dread Knight, for example, is relatively disappointing if you look at its stats and skills – especially when compared to other units. But it makes up for that in numbers, as it is also the unit you can recruit the most of each week.

The Hydra wins almost each time because of her area attack and no retaliation. Even after various upgrades are taken into consideration for each of the units in the game, it still remains on top.

On the other hand, let’s take the Waurms – while they are pretty impressive, they don’t rank as well in their standard form.

But they become absolute beasts if you upgrade them into Pyroboros, as they start dealing ranged damage to adjacent enemies (which again becomes less useful if enemies are not grouped together).

Arbitrators are also a pain to fight against, as they have both ranged damage (and they deal a ton), as well as impressive stats and great secondary skills. If they were Duelists like the Waurms, they would’ve been my top choice, most likely.

What about upgraded tier-6 units?

Bloated Arbitrator
Amazing unit design, though (Bloated Arbitrator)

There are plenty of combinations when upgrades come into play, as each unit has two different upgrades, some changing completely how the unit is played (as is the case of the Waurms, for example).

Now, considering what I think is the best upgrade unit for each, the rankings still don’t change much. Here are the best upgraded tier 6 units in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era:

  1. Chthonic Hydra (excellent abilities, still no counter, stacking Attack)
  2. Avatar of War (hits twice, lowers enemy morale, increases own Attack – very good!)
  3. Bloated Arbitrator (perfect early on, when he deals more damage to enemies that are farther away, also Slimy Touch is exellent)
  4. Pyroboros (the best Waurm upgrade, deals plenty of area damage, can revive itself, damage boost with other Hive troops)
  5. Thunder Qilin (the upgrade doesn’t bring much value apart from that extra Focus point generated each new round).
  6. Mother Superior (both upgrades are similar – while magic immunity is good, the unit itself is slow, rarely targeted and pretty unimpressive overall).

As you can see, things don’t change much in the rankings, even when we take upgrades in account. But these upgrades are important – just like correct Fortification upgrades are.

Wrapping up

Things might change until the game leaves early access, but I will make sure to keep this article up to date, so it reflects the latest game data.

What do you think about these rankings of Tier 6 units in Olden Era? Do you agree with them, or do you have other favorites?
