I wrote about the best Tier 6 units in Olden Era recently, and I will cover each tier to make things more interesting (and easier to follow), but I think we also need a general “best of” type of article that includes all units in the game.
And no, I won’t list all Tier 7 units and call them “the best”. I will look at how useful each unit in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is based on its tier and also how much I enjoy using that unit in battle (or hate facing it). Based on that, this list will be complete and share the general list of the top units in the game.
Note: As Olden Era is still in early access and the developers are constantly releasing patches changing things around, this list is not final, but I will make sure to update it constantly to reflect the latest meta.
Best Units in Olden Era
I am listing below the top 10 units in the game, in no particular order, because it’s difficult to say that a Tier 1 unit is better than a Tier 7, even though in some very specific situations, it can be.
Faun

One of the best Tier-1 units in the game (if not THE best). They’re great to have, terrible to fight against, mainly because of their ability to counter first.
The route I follow, and which works best, is to usually keep them ranged until mid-game, then switch their upgrade to melee. It works great, they deal a ton of damage and their first counter is, as I said, lovely.
The only downside is their low growth rate, but even so, a top unit in Olden Era.

Wight

I am listing the base unit here, because it’s really good, but it gets even better when you upgrade it to Wraith, as its HP leech climbs up to 40%.
If you have a huge stack (and with Necromancers – the best faction in Olden Era at the moment), chances are you do, that is a massive advantage. Yes, they have low HP and stats, but if you play them right, you can turn them into a truly unbeatable force.
Onyx Dancer

The Dancers are arguably the best Tier-3 unit in the game, and extremely useful early on and on smaller maps. The Aureate Dancer upgrade is the route I follow to reduce a target’s defense, hammer it down from afar…
There are really no downsides to this unit.
Griffin

A solid unit in HoMM3, a great one in Olden Era, especially with the Guardian Griffin upgrade.
Its main power lays in the multiple counterattacks, but also the ability that increases Initiative and Speed. A great unit to send wherever you need it on the battlefield to cause serious damage.
Arbitrator

No matter which upgrade route you follow, Arbitrators are just excellent. Probably the best ranged unit in the game, great stats, great abilities… nothing to complain about.

Hydra

One of my favorite units in the game, especially the Infernal Hydra. You get no counterattacks, you deal massive damage and can hurt multiple enemies.
Apart from that, the more it attacks, the higher its Attack gets, while enemies deal less damage. A lovely unit.
Vampire

Similar to the Wight/Wraight combo, Vampires can regenerate during a fight, restoring fallen units (but not generating extras).
I prefer the Vampire Lord upgrade, as the no counter ability helps with the regeneration overall, and requires no Focus Points. Yes, they have very low health, but it’s easy to avoid casualties when you have them.
Phoenix

Probably the best T7 unit in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era at the moment, if we look purely at its stats (especially if you go the Energy Phoenix, which can bring back to life fallen units, as an added bonus).
But with amazing initiative and solid stats, it is definitely one of the best units in the game. The only downside is that, in shorter games and on smaller maps, it’s difficult to get early.
Kittenhorn

The only Neutral unit in the game, Kittenhorns are the ones I actually attack only when I am 100% sure they will flee. I will NEVER fight them.
While they don’t have insane stats, their Berserk ability they cast upon death (making your own units attack each other) can deal a lot more damage than they can. They are annoying and I’d love to be able to have them in my army, though.
Skeleton Archer

We’re rounding up the list with another Tier-1 unit. I actually debated if I should include them, the Dread Knight or the Hive Queen, both great units, but I decided to go for the ol’ Skeletons.
But, as you can see, I say “Skeleton Archer” – so their upgraded version. And the reason they make it on the list is simple: playing Necropolis, you will get tons of them especially early on, giving you an almost-unfair advantage in the game.
So yes, even though their individual stats are not amazing, they make up for that if you’re a smart player and work on increasing their numbers through battle.
Wrapping up
These are the absolute best units in HoMM Olden Era at the moment, including ranged, melee, top-tier and lower-tier units, as well as one of the toughest neutral units in the game.
