First, magic spells in Forspoken are split into four categories, based on their effects. Here are all of them:

  • Frey’s Magic (Purple Magic) – Magic based on the earth element.
  • Sila’s Magic (Red Magic) – Magic based on the fire element.
  • Prav’s Magic (Blue Magic) – Magic based on the water element.
  • Olas’ Magic (Green Magic) – Magic based on the light element.

In turn, each of those four categories is split into two sub-categories: offensive and defensive/support magic.

Thus, there are eight total sub-categories of magic, with four of them being offensive spells, and the remaining four being defensive ones.

However, based on the enemy you’re facing and your defensive needs, you will require a different sub-category each time. Let’s see how to switch between them easily.

To switch magic spells in Forspoken, players need to hold R1 if they want to switch among any of the four offensive sub-categories, or L1 if they prefer the four supportive ones.

Then, press or hold R2 to cast offensive spells, or L2 for defensive ones.

It is important to note that attack magic does not have cooldown or ammo limits.

On the other hand, defense magic has cooldowns which can be reduced when using attack magic.

There is another type of magic in Forspoken known as Surge Magic. This is Frey’s ultimate magic, which requires a lot of build-up before casting.

Specifically, to charge Surge Magic players will need to use multiple attack and defense spells until the triangle in the bottom right of the screen is filled.

Then, by holding L2 and R2 simultaneously, Frey will cast her most powerful attack.
