Magic is one of the three columns of weapon options, in the Fire Emblem franchise. Most often paired with Staves for utility and a direct counter to armored units.
With the open class system in this game, I will go over the best mages you can have in your team in Fire Emblem Engage.
With four different types of tomes, Thunder tomes can attack from long-range, Wind tomes deal with fliers that have high resistance, and Surge tomes have infinite hit, but can only attack close range.
Lastly, Fire tomes are the basic 1- 2 range tomes, that most mage units can make use of.
Since you are looking into mage units check out the best pairings for Celica. She will greatly buff your mages.
Best Mages
Celine
Citrine princess of Firene is a unit that joins in Chapter 4: A Land in Bloom. She will grow to be an exceptional unit if you take the time to raise her.
Keep her in the Vidame class, the unique class she can promote.
Base Stats | Personal Growth Rates | Total Growth Rates | |
---|---|---|---|
HP | 22 | 50% | 50% |
Strength | 7 | 35% | 40% |
Magic | 9 | 25% | 35% |
Dexterity | 9 | 30% | 35% |
Speed | 10 | 45% | 50% |
Defense | 5 | 30% | 35% |
Resistance | 7 | 40% | 50% |
Luck | 11 | 50% | 70% |
Build | 4 | 5% | 5% |
With access to Swords, Tomes, and Staves she can break Axe enemies with the Lewin Sword. Equip any Tome you may need to counter enemy forces and use staves to turn the tables in your favor.
Staves like Silence, Obstruct, and Fracture can be quite useful.
Ivy
Ivy princess of Elusia is a unit that joins in the latter half of Chapter 11: Retreat. From her join time, she is an exceptional unit, that you can promote instantly.
Lindwurm is one of those rare cases, where we get a flying mage, and, unsurprisingly, it’s an exclusive class.
Base Stats | Personal Growth Rates | Total Growth Rates | |
---|---|---|---|
HP | 32 | 55% | 60% |
Strength | 7 | 25% | 25% |
Magic | 17 | 30% | 50% |
Dexterity | 15 | 25% | 25% |
Speed | 13 | 40% | 40% |
Defense | 12 | 30% | 40% |
Resistance | 15 | 35% | 55% |
Luck | 4 | 15% | 15% |
Build | 7 | 10% | 10% |
The Lindwurm class allows Ivy to either kill or clear up any straggling units from relative safety or good tiles. Even if she gets countered she has good defenses to survive and return to get healed.
It is not recommended to use her for her staff utility, because being a flying unit allows you to move her into trickier positioning.
Anna
Anna is an unconventional choice. I understand most people would do a quick once-over because Anna is on here, but she really is one of the best mages in Fire Emblem Engage.
Anna joins your army in Paralogue 2: Mysterious Merchant, as an Axe Fighter.
Base Stats | Personal Growth Rates | Total Growth Rates | |
---|---|---|---|
HP | 29 | 55% | 80% |
Strength | 10 | 15% | 35% |
Magic | 2 | 50% | 50% |
Dexterity | 9 | 50% | 55% |
Speed | 7 | 50% | 60% |
Defense | 4 | 20% | 30% |
Resistance | 5 | 35% | 35% |
Luck | 3 | 45% | 45% |
Build | 7 | 5% | 10% |
As you can see from her growth rates upon joining, a 50% magic growth is nothing to look down on.
Unfortunately, it will take some time, but by promoting her as soon as possible, and then second sealing her at level 5 from her advanced class to Martial Monk she will become a force to be feared.
High Priest her final class, will give her a massive boost to Magic and Luck allowing players to have multiple situations to make use of her personal skill.
Citrinne
Citrinne is the most traditional mage unit in a sense. Following her predecessors, she focuses on high Magic and Resistance.
She joins your army in Chapter 7: Dark Emblem.
Base Stats | Personal Growth Rates | Total Growth Rates | |
---|---|---|---|
HP | 29 | 45% | 45% |
Strength | 10 | 10% | 10% |
Magic | 2 | 40% | 65% |
Dexterity | 9 | 25% | 30% |
Speed | 7 | 30% | 30% |
Defense | 4 | 20% | 20% |
Resistance | 5 | 40% | 65% |
Luck | 3 | 25% | 30% |
Build | 7 | 5% | 5% |
Whether you play Citrinne as a Sage or Mage Knight depends on whether you’ll have multiple tome-users on your army or if you have a more mobile army.
Sage will give you more of a glass cannon Citrinne, while Mage Knight will give you a more tanky playstyle, that allows you to take a hit and keep moving.
Pandreo
Pandreo is a pre-promoted High Priest that joins your army in Chapter 12: The Sentinels.
A lot can be said about raising units from their low beginnings, but as the game progresses, you may find yourself in need of an amazing healer.
Base Stats | Personal Growth Rates | Total Growth Rates | |
---|---|---|---|
HP | 34 | 60% | 60% |
Strength | 7 | 5% | 5% |
Magic | 16 | 30% | 55% |
Dexterity | 18 | 45% | 45% |
Speed | 17 | 45% | 50% |
Defense | 8 | 15% | 15% |
Resistance | 22 | 55% | 85% |
Luck | 14 | 30% | 60% |
Build | 8 | 15% | 15% |
You can easily use him to defeat enemies with low health, but utilize him with staves to heal your units.
In his join time, he will heal most, if not all your units to max health. You will really get a lot by using him.
Conclusion
In conclusion, these have been the best mage units in Fire Emblem Engage. Utilize their strengths, and my personal recommendation would be to fill your team with them.
