Kagetsu is one of the eight recruitable characters from Elusia in Fire Emblem Engage, known for being princess Ivy’s retainer, and an antagonist in your first two encounters. Upon joining your army though, he will become a force to be reckoned with.
For those of you who are looking for an idea of what to expect, without stressing over the details, these are his best class and Emblem Rings in Fire Emblem Engage. To start his best class is the Swordmaster, and his best Emblems Rings are either Marth or Lyn.
If you’re interested in other characters, consider checking out our guide on the best class for each character in the game.
In this guide, I will go over the best class for Kagetsu, the two best options for Emblem Rings to equip, two Bond Rings that can be a good second option, and the best skills to inherit on him.
How to Recruit Kagetsu in Fire Emblem Engage
Upon reaching Chapter 11: Retreat in the main story, you will be in the last part of a chain of main story quests.
Start the mission and when Turn 6 Player Phase starts Ivy, along with Kagetsu and Zelkov will join your army. They will join automatically, so don’t worry about your placement with Alear.
Since it’s an Escape map, Alear will be the only one you need to escape with. Make sure to keep your other units safe and finish the map. Be careful because if you lose, you will need to restart the chain of main story chapters from the beginning.
Best Build for Kagetsu in Fire Emblem Engage (Class & Emblem)
Kagetsu starts as a pre-promoted Swordsmaster. This is by far his best class to end on, and the class skill Run Through will be something you can make great use of when he learns it at level 5.
Run Through upon use will move the unit to attack an adjacent foe, then move to the space opposite that foe. A great repositioning skill to make space and allow your team to get in and clear the enemies.
As for Emblem Rings, Kagetsu’s capabilities in battle can be further increased with either Marth or Lyn.
Marth gives you great buffs if the unit is equipped with a sword and Lyn allows you to gain more speed and double most enemies.
Though, I do know that Emblem Rings are precious, so a great alternative would be the Bond Rins of Alm or Navvare. Alm provides Windsweep and Navarre Deadly Blade at S-rank.

Best Skills for Kagetsu in Fire Emblem Engage
Every character can have up to 3 Skills equipped at a time, but don’t let that stop you from experimenting with different builds. The best skills I recommend are as follows.
- Brave Assist (Hero, Lvl 5) – This will allow Kagetsu to add the brave effect on his chain attacks if he is at full HP.
- Alacrity++ (Lyn, Lv. 18) – If Kagetsu initiates combat with a Speed advantage of five or higher, his follow-up move occurs before the foe’s counterattack (SP cost 3,000).
- Perceptive+ (Marth, Lv. 16) – If Kagetsu initiates combat, gain +15 Avoidance during combat, which increases based on Speed (SP cost 500).
- Speedtaker (Lyn, Lv. 3) – Grants Speed +2 when Kagetsu initiates combat and defeats a foe. Stacks up to +10 (SP cost 2,000).
- Vantage++ (Lief, Lv. 18) – If Kagetsu’s HP is 75% or less and the foe initiates combat, Kagetsu can counter before the foe’s first attack. (SP cost 3,000)
Some of the SP requirements seem pretty high, but as you can see some of the skills are upgrades of skills that are unlocked earlier.
If you purchase the previous stages of the skill, the SP cost will be removed from the upgrades. This way you can slowly build up to the skill level you need.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the best way to use Kagetsu in Fire Emblem Engage will be as Swordmaster. Equip him with the Marth ring, and watch him tear the battlefield apart.
Although join in the midgame, he will be a more than welcome addition to your army, and a blast to use. His battle animations are also something amazing to see.
