How to unlock mounts in Diablo IV

The first mount the player can unlock in Diablo IV is the basic mount by reaching the capital of the Fractured Peaks, Kyovashad, and finding the Stable Master. Talking with this NPC opens a menu where you can see all the mounts you currently own.

After completing the quest, that the master gives you, “Mount: Donan’s Favor“, your first Diablo 4 mount will be unlocked. This quest will become available once you reach Act 2 and will let you use all the features of this system.

The other known Diablo 4 mounts at the current moment can be unlocked by doing various activities that include world events, clearing strongholds, and slaying world bosses, but also by pre-ordering the game or buying the Deluxe or Ultimate edition.

List of mounts and how to unlock them

How to unlock Diablo 4 Mounts

Currently, we only know about five mounts and how to unlock them. There is speculation that at launch, there will be other mounts, more than 20 of them. But until then, let’s take a look at all of the Diablo 4 mounts listed below and how to unlock them:

How to unlock Basic Mount

As mentioned, this brown horse can be easily unlocked after completing the “Mount: Donan’s Favor” quest given by the NPC from the stables. For many players, this will be the first of many mounts in Diablo 4.

How to unlock Temptation Mount

Temptation Mount

Players can unlock the Temptation mount by purchasing either the Digital Deluxe or the Ultimate Edition editions while also gaining a Hellbound carapace mount armor to go with it. These two rewards will be exclusive by purchasing one of the two editions mentioned earlier, so why not claim them now?

How to unlock Spectral Charger Mount

Spectral Charger Mount

Any player can unlock this undead mount by completing a series of activities. First, the player must clear the Kor Drogan stronghold found north of Kyovashad to unlock The Gathering Legions event. Once the event is unlocked, players will need to slay as many enemies as possible until the timer of the event is over.

Once the Gathering Legion event is done, the players will receive the Spectral charger mount as a reward. Eventho this mount can be received before the quest to unlock the traveling system, players will still need to complete the introductory quest to use the Spectral charger mount.

How to unlock Light Bearer Mount

Quite the opposite of the Spectral charger mount in appearance, the Light Bearer mount can be unlocked by pre-ordering any edition of the game. Once the game has been released, this angelic mount, alongside the Faith Mount Armor, will be automatically added to your collection.

How to unlock Decaying Steed Mount

Decaying Steed Mount

This half-dead, half-alive mount can be unlocked if you are lucky enough to cross paths with a Treasure Goblin. Slaying Treasure Goblins will have a chance to drop this mount, so you will probably need to find more than one.

You only need to be careful not to let the Treasure Goblin teleport after he runs away from you. This will happen a few times, depending on the damage you can inflict upon it while ignoring the other enemies around it.

Diablo 4 Mounts in battle

Each class has special dismounting attacks when riding their mount into battle, used simply by pressing one button. We will list below each unique skill:

  • Sorcerer – While jumping from the mount’s back, the Sorcerer will form an Ice Storm that freezes the enemies in its path.
  • Rogue – The Rogue will leap off the mount and shoot a rain of arrows mid-air.
  • Druid – While shapeshifting into a werebear, the druid will slam onto the ground, damaging all nearby enemies.
  • Barbarian – The Barbarian will automatically dismount, leaping into the air and slamming the ground twice, dealing physical damage.
  • Necromancer – While jumping off the mount, the Necromancer will slam into the ground, releasing a cone of Bone Magic to damage enemies nearby.

Mount Customization in D4

In Diablo IV, in-game mounts have access to customization. A mount’s appearance can be changed by acquiring various Bardings throughout the open world and adding them to the mount at the stable.

You can also add armor and trophies to your mount, but the benefits of doing that, other than the customization options, are unclear. More information will be available once the full game has been released since the early access had limited information.

We are sure you will be able to find these customization items by completing various activities, like finding hidden locations or defeating world bosses.

Mount upgrades and trophies

You can equip various items like Horseshoes (Hoof plated items) to your mounts, giving them bonuses like the mount’s speed increase or other mount additions. You can also gain access to mount trophies, but at the moment, we are still determining if they will provide any effect on the player or the mount. The thing we know for sure is that you will be able to see these trophies dangling on the side of your mount.

If you have played the beta phase of the game and killed the world boss found in Fractured Peaks, once the full release of the game is available, you will be rewarded with the Cry of Ashava mount trophy, so make sure you don’t miss that out.

Final thoughts

As we have previously stated throughout this guide, mounts in Diablo 4 are a new and valuable addition to the game, customizable to the player’s taste. This new feature will save time for the players, as they can travel at a higher speed across long distances.

We hope the information in this guide was helpful and that you have learned a lot about the mounts, customization options, and how to improve mounts in Diablo 4.
