Bug Alliance Brings Brutal Pixel RPG Action to Steam Early Access (And Some Solid Sim Ant Vibes!)

Indie devs keep cranking out surprises, and Bug Alliance is shaping up to be one worth watching. Coming from Ent-Re Games out of Izmir, Turkey, this pixel-action RPG is set to hit Steam Early Access by the end of the year, with a free demo already available.

The setup is as wild as it sounds: after a meteor wipes out humanity, the Worm Empire rises to enslave the surviving insects.

King Glutton and his Worms feed on greed, while the Bugs rally under their Queens, forming the underground “Requiem Society” to fight back. The result? A post-apocalyptic bug war with plenty of lore and more bite than you’d expect from tiny pixel creatures.

Here’s the first gameplay trailer, showcasing a bit of the full experience:

Too much for you? The recently announced Heartopia might be a better fit then.

When the full game launches, there will be three game modes available to play:

  • Onslaught: endless waves of Worms and bosses, with essences to collect for evolving your warriors.
  • Resistance: a tower-defense spin where you protect mining stations and gather resources.
  • Expedition: a roguelike trek through randomized battlefields packed with objectives, traders, and escalating threats.

Progression revolves around evolution, proficiency, and ascension – basically, leveling up your bug squad, unlocking new gear and abilities, and mastering the skill tree to take on tougher challenges. Achievements and rewards promise to keep both casual grinders and hardcore min-maxers busy.

Ent-Re Games is leaning into the details, too. We’re talking unique bug characters, tactical gear, weapon and ability upgrades, plus lore books and mod systems for deeper customization.

Check out three screenshots I selected from the game which paint a clearer picture of both the level of depth and the style of the game:

Not a ton of options, but enough to keep things interesting.

Worms, battles, crazy weapons and skill cooldowns… perfection!

I absolutely love the art style!

The chunky pixel visuals instantly hit me with nostalgia and made me think of SimAnt, a game I played over and over again as a kid. Bug Alliance feels like the spiritual successor I never knew I needed, but with more blood, grit, and pixel carnage and, apparently, less strategy. Which is still good in my books!

With its mix of brutal combat, retro visuals, and smart progression systems, Bug Alliance looks like it could carve out a niche alongside modern roguelikes and survival games. Whether it can earn a seat at the indie classics table will come down to how it balances difficulty, variety, and long-term progression once Early Access becomes available by the end of 2025. Keep an eye on it on Steam.
