The Giant Piranha is the boss fight of Island 2 in How to Fish, and it gives you a glimpse of the difficulty of these boss fights.
While not as difficult as beating the Pufferfish, the Giant Piranha is tough, especially because you’re still in your early stages in the game and most likely tackling it unprepared.
But I am here to help you by sharing a guide on how to beat the Giant Piranha both solo and coop, what weapons to use and everything you need to know from starting this boss fight to ending it successfully.
How to Summon the Giant Piranha
The fight can be initiated by interacting with the woman wearing a hat. She needs three leeches and for them, she will give you Leech Bait.
With the Leech Bait, you can summon the boss – but don’t do that just yet! You need to prepare first (more on this below).
The Giant Piranha shows up as soon as you launch the Leech Bait and seems unimpressive at first. However, things get a bit more interesting (read: difficult) when it starts summoning a bunch of smaller piranhas that also attack you.
Best Weapons for Defeating the Giant Piranha
You will need a ranged weapon to successfully master this fight. Any goes, really, but the easiest to obtain at this stage is the shotgun.
It costs $150, and you can get it on Island 2. The best part of the shotgun is that its spread covers a wide enough area to catch both the Giant Piranha and the smaller piranhas it summons.
Dynamite is also extremely useful in any boss fight in How to Fish. In this particular case, it’s even more useful because of the AoE damage that also destroys the smaller piranhas.
The blast also kills any fish caught in it, which you can grab for free food and healing mid-fight, alongside the small piranhas you destroy.
How to Defeat Solo
Going solo is difficult, but not impossible. The main thing you must do is keep moving – keep circling around the island and keep shooting while constantly eating small piranhas to keep your health up.
The Giant Piranha itself is slow, slow enough that you’ll get real windows to heal or reposition.
If you have Dynamite, save it for its second phase (when the smaller ones start flooding in).
And keep an eye on the smaller piranhas! Many deaths result from being boxed in by those, and not destroyed by the boss itself. So never stop moving and never get yourself cornered.
How to Beat the Giant Piranha in Multiplayer
If you approach the fight in multiplayer, things change drastically. The Giant Piranha’s health pool scales up with your group size, so it’s not automatically easier.
What makes it easier, though, is the fact that you can split the job: one person kites, everyone else shoots. That’s basically it.
An interesting strategy here is to take advantage of the boat. Before summoning the Giant Piranha, let just one team member on the island and the rest on the boat.
The Giant Piranha can’t catch the boat, and it will focus on the one on the island while the ones in the boat will safely blast it with shotgun shells until it’s gone.

As long as you keep moving and use the shotgun/dynamite combo, you should be find and eventually beat the Giant Piranha before the timer runs out. It’s a bit more difficult Solo, but it’s doable.
