Valheim: How to Tame Boars

For players looking to get a stable production of leather scraps and boar meat, taming boars is the best way for that.

Valheim allows you to tame and breed animals in your base to ensure you’ll always have enough of their provided resources without having to go out of your way to get them.

In this guide, I will explain how to tame and breed boars in Valheim, as well as how to get baby piglets with stars to ensure greater drops.

How to Make a Pen and Find Boars in Valheim

The first step in the boar-taming process is making a pen. In any outside locations, ideally close to your base, make a small (around 3×3) area surrounded by half walls or fences and with a door.

Optionally, you can surround this area with outside walls to avoid it getting damaged during raids.

Keep in mind that you must avoid using torches or any form of fire completely. Since the goal is to place boars inside, and boars are afraid of fire, torches will make them frightened.

After making the pen, leave the door open and go exploring in the Meadows to find boars. Once you find a boar, get close to it and make it angry. This way, it will start chasing you.

Move toward the pen with the boar chasing you while making sure not to run too quickly. Lead the boar into the pen and that’s it!

Repeat with a second boar and you’re ready to start the breeding process as there are no animal genders in Valheim.

As long as you have two boars in a pen, you are ready to start taming and breeding them.

Thankfully, taming the boars is straightforward. You need to feed them any of the following foods.

  • Mushrooms (found in the Meadows, Black Forest, and Swamp – they always respawn at the same place after four real-life hours)
  • Carrots (obtain carrot seeds from the Black Forest, plant them with the Cultivator, and wait 60-80 minutes until they’re fully grown)
  • Raspberries (found in bushes in the Meadows – they respawn after five in-game hours)
  • Blueberries (found in bushes in the Black Forest – they respawn after five in-game hours)

After having your boars in a pen, simply throw any of these foods to the ground and the boars will eat them.

From there, you’ll notice the boar’s status changing to ‘acclimatizing’ and a new ‘Tameness’ bar appearing on top of them.

When tameness reaches 100%, the boars will be fully tamed and thus ready to start making babies.

On average, it takes 20-30 real-life minutes after the boar becomes happy until it starts making babies.

Lastly, make sure your boars are always happy and never hungry, and they’ll keep making babies.

How to Breed Boars with Stars in Valheim

After breeding, boars will make piggies, which will then grow into boars in Valheim.

You’ll notice that each animal and monster in Valheim can have stars, which increase its HP, strength, and loot drops.

Boars bred by the previously mentioned process can also end up having one or two stars. Here’s how this can happen.

As long as one of the parents has a star, the baby also has a chance of being born with a star.

Therefore, if you’re roaming in the wild and find a two-star boar, try and get it into your pen to start breeding it. This way, each boar will yield significantly more resources.

Wrapping up

To sum up, that’s everything you need to know on how to tame and breed boars in Valheim.

Find a boar in the wild, ideally with one or two stars, bring it into your newly built pen, and feed it with the recommended foods until it’s happy.
