Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: How to Learn Egg Moves

Pokemon can learn egg moves in Scarlet and Violet by using the special item Mirror Herb. Most Pokemon have certain unique moves that can’t be learned by leveling up or by using TMs.

These are called egg moves and they’ve been available in almost every Pokemon game so far.

If you’re trying to get a specific moveset for a Pokemon you’re training, there’s a high chance for one of those moves to be an egg move.

In this guide, I will explain how to learn egg moves in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet via the new method and explain how to get the Mirror Herb item which is essential in this process.

Before beginning to learn egg moves, it’s essential to get your hands on one Mirror Herb.

Thankfully, Mirror Herb can be used multiple times so you only need one. There’s no reason to stock up on those.

Start by traveling to the Cascarrafa (North) teleport point and head to the nearby shop named Delibird Presents. Navigate to the Battle Items tab and buy one Mirror Herb which will cost 30,000.

How to Learn Egg Moves by Using the Mirror Herb in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

A new way of learning egg moves has been introduced in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet that is much easier compared to the breeding option from previous games.

For this method, players will need to come prepared with the three following things.

  1. A Pokemon that wants to learn a certain egg move (check Serebii to find out which Pokemon can learn which egg moves)
  2. A second Pokemon that has this certain move (doesn’t have to be an egg move for them)
  3. A Mirror Herb

For instance, as we can see from Serebii, Pawmot can learn the Egg move ‘Sweet Kiss’ (scroll down to the last tab named Egg Moves).

To make Pawmot learn Sweet Kiss, first of all, you’ll need a Pawmot. Make it forget one of its four moves so that it’s ready to learn a new one.

Then, you need a Pokemon that knows Sweet Kiss. One great example is Tinkatink, which learns Sweet Kiss by leveling up (Level 21). To find out all Pokemon with Sweet Kiss, check the specific move on Serebii.

Then, buy one Mirror Herb and equip it as a held item to Pawmot (the Pokemon that will learn the egg move).

Lastly, set up a picnic for a few seconds and pack everything up almost immediately. As long as you’ve had these two Pokemon in the picnic, and Pawmot had an empty move slot you’ll notice that it learned Sweet Kiss.

One important tip is to have only these two Pokemon in your party. The reason is that if another Pokemon in your party also has one of Pawmot’s egg moves, Pawmot might end up learning the wrong one.

To sum up, that’s everything you need to know on how to get egg moves in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Thankfully, the process had been made significantly easier compared to the previous games.

Find a Pokemon with an egg move you want to learn, get a different Pokemon that knows this exact move, equip the Mirror Herb on the first Pokemon, and set up a picnic for one second.

And that’s all! Now the first Pokemon knows the egg move from the second Pokemon.
