Causing confusion on the enemy in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet can be a pretty effective move when used properly. The Confuse Ray is a ghost-type move that does exactly that and can be obtained through the TM material, TM017.

The Confuse Ray is usually learnt by specific Pokémon as they level up; but, thanks to the TM machines, it’s also possible for a wider range of Pokémon to learn and implement this move. It’s associated with the TM017 material.

How To Get Confuse Ray (TM017) in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

The Confuse Ray move has to be crafted in a TM machine, which is available in all the Pokémon Centers in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

The items required for obtaining the Confuse Ray move are the TM material, TM017, 3 Gastly Gas, 3 Mareep Wool, and 400 League Points (LP).

The main challenge you’ll face will be locating the TM017. It doesn’t spawn in too many places around Paldea, and you may have to spend some time looking for it.

Firstly, you’ll be required to defeat the Dark Crew, which belongs to Team Stars. This will unlock your ability to craft in TM machines.

Where to get Confuse Ray (TM017) in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Now, to find TM017, there are two specific locations where you’re most likely to run into this material.

South Province Area Five in Map Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Make your way to the Pokecenter located in South Province (Area Five). If you head north from there, you’ll come across several small ponds and lakes that are scattered around the land.

Around the same area, you should also notice broken walls and pillars. You’ll probably notice it better if you can go on top of a hill. The TM017 can be obtained in the area around these broken structures.

If you aren’t able to find the TM017 in this location, you can try your luck in the South Province (Area Three) region.

From the Pokecenter present in that area, look for the TM017 on top of the hills. Look carefully around the hilly areas and you should come across this TM material in no time!

Once you’ve found Confuse Ray (TM017), it’s time to craft the move in a TM machine.

How to Craft Confuse Ray in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Make sure you have enough Gastly Gas and Mareep Wool as well as 400 LP before going to your nearest Pokecenter.

Interact with the green TM machine in the Pokecenter, and select “I want a TM made”.

The resulting menu will present you with the TM materials that you have collected overtime. For each TM, the Pokémon that are eligible for it are displayed on the left of the menu.

Navigate to the TM017 to see which of your Pokémon can make use of the Confuse Ray moveset. Select the Pokémon you want to teach Confuse Ray to, and voila!

The Confuse Ray is a pretty strong move in its own right. It’s a Ghost-type move with an accuracy of 100.

Its main effect is to cause the inflicted Pokemon to be confused, increasing the chances of the Pokemon inflicting damage on itself.

Confuse Ray is found in even lesser locations than the Fire Spin (TM024), and it can be time-consuming to find and locate this material. But, once you have done so, it can be extremely useful.
