DOOM Ditches Season Pass in the Devilishly Numbered 6.66 Update

If you haven’t yet taken a sunny trip to the depths of Hell and took out some demons, now is the greatest time! The 2016 DOOM reboot is getting an ultimate update in the form of the cleverly numbered 6.66 Update. This update focuses on a number of bug fixes and multiplayer changes.

First we’ll talk about perhaps the biggest change of them all – DOOM is officially dropping the Season Pass! Now all you need to play the whole multiplayer experience is just the base game, which is a pretty sweet deal. That’s right – if you only have the original game, this update will automatically unlock all nine DLC multiplayer maps, three new weapons, three more playable demons, new equipment, and armor sets. You’ll also be able to play with bots too!

The multiplayer progression system is the next thing on the list that’s getting revamped. Previously, playing multiplayer matches and leveling up unlocked a random item for you to play with. This unlock method has been scrapped in favor of a more solidified experience, as you can now unlock things through a more typical progression tree. You’ll be able to see exactly what you can unlock and how to do it.

Veteran players of DOOM multiplayer, this next part is important. All players will have their level reset to zero – but JUST your level. You will have the option of either completely resetting your current progression so that you can experience the new system OR you can opt to keep everything you’ve unlocked so far, which includes your guns, gear, and customization stuff. Either decision you choose you’ll be able to show off a nifty badge showing off your veteran status.

The Hack Module system is also getting replaced by an all-new Runes system. Runes are passive abilities that can be equipped in your loadout and function like perks from modern first-person shooters. They aren’t temporary boosts like the Hack Modules, so you can reliably create new loadouts based around these runes.

The single-player campaign remains largely unchanged, but if you haven’t experienced the adrenaline rush that is the new DOOM, we’ve got one more surprise for you. The full game will be available for free play through the weekend on the following days!

  • Xbox One – 12pm ET July 20
  • PlayStation 4 – 12pm ET July 27
  • PC – 1pm ET July 20

Your save data will remain after the free period, so you’ll pick up right where you left off if you purchase the game. Speaking of which: DOOM will be on sale during the free weekend for $14.99 (US) / £11.99 (UK) / $17.99 (AUS)! Don’t delay – demons don’t like to be kept waiting!
