The Achievement Bandwagon
I’m going to get plucked and roasted alive for saying this, but as of last night, Eve Online jumped on the achievement bandwagon with it’s latest expansion Quantum Rise. It’s not a flashy system like WAR or WoW and it’s not even called achievements…they’re called Certificates. When I first logged in last night to take a quick look, my first reaction was, “ohhhhh nooooo…this is baaaad.” and by “baaad”, I mean good. Instead of trying to figure out my skill goals by browsing forums or using EveMon, I now have the Certificate system to a) tell me how much I suck, and b) help me with goals in game. This is a big hit with me and I’m sure it’ll be huge with new players.
I’m glad CCP has decided to give players some kind of achievement system (…commence plucking…), and they are doing it their way. There is no visual goodies or even a “ding” sound when you get an certificate. Actually, you don’t even know you have one until you go to the Certificate Planner and “claim” your certificate. Very Eve-like. They’ve put in this type of game play without it making it feel like they borrowed it from another game. I’m looking at YOU Blizzard! In other words…they made an achievements-like system that is their own. I’m just patiently waiting for EQ2 to do something along these lines…although, it can be argued that it has it already.
Anyway…good stuff in Eve Online with regards to the patch. Now I just have to make some ISK for that Titan
D out.
